Posted this same thread last night...

I think we should all take the time to write a letter to Kang Shin-who, the racist reporter for the Korea Times. His articles about random topics always include weird and unnecessary attacks upon foreigners, citing imagery events and non-existent facts.

Today he wrote about the increase of foreigners in Korean universities and random mentioned that "many" of them deal drugs... That's a complete irrelevant statement to the topic of the article and just another in a long line of articles that give foreigners (not just ESL teachers) a totally unfair reputation.

You can read the article here:
http://www.koreatimes.co.kr/www/news/nation/2009/09/117_52207.html

And read why people hate Kang Shin-who here:

Most of the students I know DO have part-time jobs to earn a little bit of extra money. MOST of them earn the money for their studies and living expenses, which is damned expensive. They are decent people and this kind of bull will turn them into bad people in the eyes of the public. It's bad enough having laws stating that certain students cannot legally work, and others are limited to how much they can work per week. I think Korea is only interested in "rich kids" studying at their Universities. If anything, the law should be changed to allow foreign students to work legally.

I don't blame Korea for requiring work permits for students; other countries do the same. The US allowed me 20 a week and only on-campus. What annoys me is the innuendo that all foreigners do it, while shooting up.

It may be helpful to write this KT reporter, although I expect if the man has such prejudice against ESL foreigners he is unlikely to be moved by it, just as railing against Schertzer just fuels his trolling and contempt. I am not discouraging people who want to try. It might also be helpful to complain to KT directly in the form of a letter, although I have yet to have anything I've written them published.

I can only do my small, small part: to never buy the KT and to recommend that others also boycott it. The English papers here do not have large circulations, and a combined effort might make some difference. If not, I can still say that I'm not subsidizing their high school journalism.

Hey all, a few years ago the Joong ang Daily used to be worse than the KT but for unknown reasons they cleaned up their act. Maybe someone could convince some reporter over there to start calling the KT out on some of this stuff?

I'm all for writing the KT a letter about their drivel which they claim to be "news" and call to have the reporter of that article fired.

If the readers wrote a letter (doesn't have to be long) and sent it to them en masse the KT may feel pressured to act. Confused

These aren't the Visa's your looking for. Move Along now.

The If the Emperor had only blown up Endor than Han Solo and his band would never have succeeded in their mission. Yeah.

As for the Korea Times- if it is such a crappy, racist newspaper then how is it still in business? I know- it publishes bombastic articles which get people to buy it/log on.

Who would bother to read an article like "The Pleasant Young Foreign Gentlemen Who Patronized My Mini-mart on Friday" or "That Nice Korean Fellow Who Owns My Local Kim Bap Nara".

Of course all of the articles are about lewdness, crime, conflict, and anger.

IT'S THE MEDIA. The Korea Times is a Worthless Media Rag. That's the Media in General. Good Journalism is hard to sell.

As for racism in other media outlets- Front Page: Missing Cute White Girl Safe After Being Alone For Four Hours at Local Wal-Mart. Parental Abuse Charges Pending.

Front Page Sidebar: Animal Cruelty Charges Sought Against Man who Left Dog in Car for 20 Minutes

Lindsay Lohan Getting Married? Read More Page B1

Page A8 - 3 more black people in Adjacent Poor City killed for some reason- 3 local black people were killed somehow. Authorities are investigating, though drugs are suspected. Funeral Services Thursday at First Free Methodist Church.

Page A6- 23 American Tourists Evacuated Due to Guatemala Mudslides, 800 Guatemalans Dead. 23 American tourists had to be evacuated due to the event. "It was so scary said Jean Thomas, 53, we were in a helicopter above it all and it was such a terrifying sight.!" One American was injured in the evacuation, 41 year old Dale Wickham, who is being treated for a bruised knee on board the U.S.S. Tarawa. Guatemalan Authorities believe as many as 800 people may be dead and thousands more homeless.

Korean Racist Journalism- Why Foreigners are Drug-Addled Pedophiles.
American Racist Journalism- Why Non-White People Are Just Statistics.

If you don't like it, don't read it. And don't give it any attention.

Human Rights Charges- Are You Serious? Go tell someone from Darfur that your 'Human Rights' are being abused here because of that article...

Dude at some point you gotta lay down your own beef and look at what other people deal with. Seriously Chill Out. Welcome to being an ethnic minority in a foreign country. Things aren't fair for you. That's life. But look at it this way- You are better off than 90% of people in this world in their own native countries and better off than 95% of immigrant laborers around the world.

What a load of whine. "I'm not a member of the top 1% of society- Life is unfair!" Good Grief. We have things good here. Anyone who can't see that is far more delusional than any Korea Times Article.

are you blind? is there nothing in that first sentence that makes you want to shout: YOU LIE! ?

The rest of the article has nothing to do with the [Mod Edit] allegation made by the biggest biggot of the day, reporter KANG (I [Mod Edit] horses) Shin Woo

I'm not blind. I just don't see what the HUGE upset is about. He's not talking about ALL foreign students. I figured what they meant by unqualified students were those who just didn't bother going to class, studying and all that jazz.

Alright, I'll admit, saying that most 'unqualified' students are dealing narcotics is probably false.

It's more believable saying that they spend all their time playing WoW or Starcraft, but I assume that was already milked enough already just talking about students in general. (Kidding!)

But seriously though, being a foreign exchange student myself, I didn't really see what's the issue. Had the paper been entirely negative, then that's different.

Now if you'll exuse me, I have a... 'meeting' to attend to. *Cough*

Not to be snarky but I don't think this is the best strategy:

"Dear Mr. Korea Times Editor. As a Regular Reader of your Racist Rag I am writing this letter to let you know that I am appalled at how you continue to portray foreigners in your newspaper. I have already written you before on this and yet as I continue to read your newspaper, I continue to see that you continue to write racist articles. Don't you know that many foreigners read these and visit your site and are offended, and like me continue to read these articles and spend hours on your site posting comments refuting this racist garbage?. Well in this letter I mean it! One more racist article and I DEFINITELY will no longer read your newspaper, and you can bet that no other foreigner will as well because I will see to it! Do not make me write another letter."

Sincerely, Mr. Influential English Teacher.

Yeah, go ahead and draft your letter. I'm sure the Korea Times is definitely worried about losing you as a customer.

I really want to see the data supporting Horsecopulator Kang's claim that "many foreign students are trading narcotics."

those who understand the english language wuold know that the word "many" implies at least 75%.

some= 10-15%
half= 50%
many 75%
most 95%.

I want to see the motherloving data.

I would also like to see the data concerning how many foreign men have been arrested for raping a local woman at knifepoint, possessng a fake degree, caught gambling, forging a criminal record check, or any one of the other myraid of BS that the writers at the KT throw at us on a weekly basis.

It doesn't imply 75% or more. "Many" simply means a significant number. 49% can be considered "many."

And most can mean as little as 50%+1

Their site has been down all morning. Maybe someone had a better plan of action than writting a letter. Good on 'em if they did...
