Hi guys,
So i've been surfing these forums for about a year and now that graduation is imminent i've pretty much set my mind to teaching for a year. One question I have that I haven't noticed mentioned among the 1000's of pages of threads is how early should you start talking to recruiters? At my university it takes on average 2 months before your degree even comes in the mail after you graduate. I don't want to have to wait until Jan/March to start applying for ESL jobs though.
Would it be prudent for me to start talking to recruiters now and getting some of the interviews etc out of the way, then in december would they be able to verify with my school about my graduation or do they seriously need the hard copy of your degree?
Thanks for taking the time to read and reply to this, i'm 24 and have lived out on my own since my freshman year at 18 but the closer it comes to me actually doing on what i've been planning the more and more I feel like a fresh out of highschool scared kid lol. |

In the best of times, it was hard to get a job without all your paperwork ready or imminent (such as waiting for your CBC which will be here in less than a week). Now, it's different. You can try, but I would not put any money on your finding a job right now. Especially since most schools don't hire until 1 or 2 months before the job is available, and the fact that they have no proof you are going to graduate at all. I'm sure you know, but there is always this possibility or that possibility. Why wait for you when there are other people who have all their paperwork now? I wish you luck, but just be prepared for no answers and no thanks for a while. |

The most important thing is to have your diploma in hand.
I ran into this issue when I realized I wouldn't get my diploma until 6 weeks after graduation.
I was forced to put my application process on hold until I received it in the mail.
In the meantime, gather all necessary documents and learn as much as you can about the visa process. Recruiters prioritize those who are "document ready." |

Couldn't agree more.
My friend from back home got a job immediately after graduation, but the diplomas didn't come for like 2 months. She was able to do it with a certified letter from the university saying she graduated and was only waiting for the diploma to be processed. But this was in 2003. When there were a lot less teachers to be had. I wouldn't even tell someone I wanted to come to try that approach now. Waste of time and heart.
What I recommend OP, is when it is a few months till you get the diploma (before you graduate) get all your other paperwork together. CBC are good for 6 months. Get yours like 3 months before you expect to get your diploma. (American - FBI checks take a long time sometimes. If you live in certain states, it actually takes only a day or so, but it is better to do it early and get it out of the way than wait til the last minute and find out you have to do it the hard way.) If you are Candian, the CBCs are only good for 3 months, so be careful. Once you have the diploma in hand and all the other paperwork ready, you can actually be ahead of other people who don't have their paperwork yet. |

i used a "letter" to prove my graduation and i graduated in march. and came over in june. i went through korvia btw. however i still would wait it out for like another month before ur done. because if u found a job now, you might lose it because they found someone else whos ready to go. that happened to me. |
