|

Just got a new netbook. It came with a Korean version of XP and I am trying to install the English version over it.
Being a netbook, it has no cd rom drive. I copied the files from my english XP cd and pasted them onto the desktop of the netbook.
Ok, here's where I'm confused. The first time I tried to install it, it didn't work. I think I did something stupid. The second time, it worked fine. However, now when I boot the computer it has three versions of XP that I have to chose from. XP - Korea, XP - Failed, doesn't boot, and XP - English.
If i chose the English option it loads fine, but none of the files, drivers, or programs are available. They are all there under program files but they are not runable (sp?). I cannot even connect to the internet.
When I load the Korean XP everything works fine.
Obviously, I am not a computer expert.
What I would love to do is to have all of the files and drivers appear on the English version and have the other two versions of XP disappear from the boot screen.
I'm not a total noob, nor am I completely lazy. I've done a fair amount of looking around on the net, but haven't come across anything that would solve all of my problems.
If anyone has any advice, even just a place to look for answers, I would be very grateful.
If it matter, the netbook is a Samsung n310.
Thanks in advance |

OK, I'm drunk, so take this advice with a pinch of salt.
I think the problem you're having is because you don't have a physical cd, and when you try to install you're getting errors when it looks for a drive to search in. What you need to do is as follows:
You need to take your English xp cd and make a copy of it with a .iso extension. An .iso file is a kind of virtual cd. Google .iso for more info. Most software for burning cds, Nero for example, can also create an .iso file.
Secondly, you need to get some software that can create a virtual cd drive and "mount" the iso file. In other words, it creates a virtual cd drive on your system, and you can ask it to treat the iso file like a cd. DaemonTools is one example of this type of software. When you mount the iso file to a virtual drive, it will behave exactly like the real thing.
Hopefully taking this approach will solve your problem. Good luck! |

I thought the same. However, like I said the second time i installed xp - english it did install correctly. The drivers and such, i assumed, i can install from the cd that came with the netbook.
my initial problems were:
how to get rid of the Korean - XP (not necessary but i assume it's taking up disc space)
Moving over the programs that are already installed or basically getting the computer to the shape it would have been if XP - English would have been installed from the factory.
New Problems:
I have Magic Iso and Power Iso, however neither is paid for so I cannot create an iso over 300mb. I have not yet been able to find a crack. And the free iso creaters have yet to do anything but frustrate me.
When i tried to install the drivers by copying the contents of the disc onto the desktop and clicking the auto run, the computer showed a script error and could not see/read the driver files. I am assuming that this problem will go away when i figure out how to make ISO's or when i break down and buy a seperate disc drive.
What is really stupid about all of this is that I am supposed to get a copy of Windows 7 when it comes out. I suppose i should just wait. |

Ok. I found a free iso maker that worked. I installed the drivers from the cd and the xp - english looks pretty good.
So, i'm down to just a few problems:
The other programs that I already installed under XP - Korean are all there under program files (viewable in XP - english) but they won't run and aren't listed under programs. So, if i reinstall them will there be two copies (twice the wasted HD space) with like two seperate sets of folders or will installing the drivers (or whatever) just allow XP - english to access the program files.
And
I would still like to get rid of the other two versions of XP (xp -korean and xp - failed, won't boot)
hopefully i'll be able to figure this out before you nice people have to bother thinking about it. |

I know that most netbooks comes with a hidden partition that will reinstall windows, but in your case that will only reinstall korean xp. We got a netbook recently but we asked them to install an english version of xp. So then we had a non genuine version of xp pro sp2, however it's pretty easy these days to spoof the genuine advantage and get all the updates you need. On a fresh install of Korean xp you could try this http://forums.eslcafe.com/korea/viewtopic.php?t=157708 it should turn pretty much everything into english. |
