Any of you ever just go to a public school or to the local city/county school board and hand in a resume/coverletter hoping to meet with someone?
How did it go?
I imagine there would be a difference in trying that in Seoul or Busan vs a city like Wonju (population 300,000)... |

I can imagine you would not be very popular if there is already a Wannamin there. |

You can try it. Problem is, these days they are well aware of how to get a teacher with help from SMOE/EPIK/etc. |

Hi,
I guess I wonder why anyone would do this as, if the school is in a city or part of a group (which is likely) you would have to go through the application process the same way and be allocated a school through the education board even if you and the school liked each other.
Also even though they might use you part time, hiring you could make them uncomfortable due to visa issues, or they flat out won't.
Those who I have spoken to who got hired for an individual school not attached to a board of education have had dubious/ negative feedback. Basically everything is then up to the principal. |

This is just another option I thought of since the main hiring season has passed and SMOE bent me over.
I seem to remember reading over the past couple of months about some veterans going directly to a school and getting hired - even if it meant going through the hoop-jumping process of applying through a school board ---- also meaning they were not placed in the TESOL pool lottery but asigned to the school who went to the board with them to process the paperwork.
I'm just trying to see how far a net can be cast...
I'm also asking because I have a specific city (Wonju) in mind and a unique situation (dead father-in-law and mother-in-law living alone for the first time perhaps in her life ---- which is why my (Korean) wife and I decided I'd go over for a year or 2 to help out)....
I've emailed everything to the Gangwang School Board and the city school board and EPIK yesterday. I'll see if any apples fall out of the tree (to mix metaphors...)... |
