Think flying economy is bad now? New aircraft design puts passengers face-to-face in rows for budget travel
Air travel is being overhauled with a new aircraft design which plans to seat passengers facing each other in rows.
The controversial design is intended to save space and money and could see 50 per cent more passengers packed on to each plane.
Howard Guy, director of the UK company Design Q, acknowledges that some people will not be happy with the plan, but says they will be able to pay less for any inconvenience.

Budget travel though.. which means it's only for short distance. I would be OK with that if I am travelling for only an hour or so. |

It looks like the seats are staggered (sp?) so that you are not entangled in another person's feet. Leg room looks far better with this setup. For short flights this could be good. |

Yeah, for short-haul flights it wouldn't be so bad. Especially if it made things cheaper. |

Can't see it staying a "budget alternative" for ever.
I Do see this as possibly becoming the standard for ALL fights |

so they're going to do away with the video screens in the back of headrests and instead for entertainment we get to watch the person next to us sleep? is there a boat that goes to America? |

The airlines quoted in the article are all budget airlines in the UK.
I cannot see major airlines lowering their standard just to try and get more net profits.
I personally will always fly with Cathay Pacific from now on even if they are a bit more expensive (and indeed I have tried this year - the only time I didn't fly them was because I booked too late and there were absolutely no seats left on the flights I needed) because of their inflight entertainment, which is a GOD SEND for my 4 yo. |

lmao.
It will take a few years for this to even become standard. Airlines still keep old models until they outlive their use. Although they will carry much more seat capacity there are still many flights that are barely even fully booked. So they still do have a use for older models of airliners.
I see this becoming a trend for very frequent travel paths such as between Hong Kong and Japan where there are frequent flights of relatively short distances. In addition, just as a generalization, Asian people aren't so much "bothered" by other people. Most of Asia (especially if they are travelers) are probably used to close quarter breathing conditions.
I actually think it's a great idea, but it's going to feel like being on a train. |

The KTX has certain seats in which you must face other passengers, and they're the least favorite. |

That article said the passengers would be sitting on barstools. If those barstools are situated around a bar then I would definitely fly Ryanair |

I took a freighter from Busan to Long Beach last March. Took 15 days and cost around $1500. Lots of leg room! |
