I've searched some grammar websites and couldn't find an answer so I figured I'd check here.
What, if any, is the rule for using 'the' (thuh) and 'the' (thee) in a sentence?

Do you mean the pronunciation? I learned that you pronounce "thee" if the word after it starts with a vowel. I tried searching for a rule online and came across this website: http://www.englishclub.com/pronunciation/the.htm
Hope that helps. |

Rules for a, an and the rely on vowel sound, not vowel. Eg
Do you have an MA?
Is that an LG television?
I'll see you in an hour
Send an SOS message immediately
He works for the (thu) CIA
She works for the (thee) FBI
The (thee) can also be used for effect: that is the best film I've ever seen.
Agree that you need to judge it by ear - like all rules, there are exceptions. |
