^ Didn't know we were talking about the Touch. I was thinking Nano or Classic. The OP didn't mention the Touch or that they'd spend around 500,000.
Of course, if you can get over using iTunes, the Touch is a great PMP.
But that's because it's 200,000 + more than another 16GB PMP. |
An 8gb touch is under 300k. I'd happily sacrifice 8gigs of storage for the other capabilities. |
How about an AMOLED screen? Superior battery life? Would you sacrifice those too?

But, you know, I'm not going to say that the Touch is not an amazing PMP. It is. But there are competitors. It's not way out ahead on it's own. |
AMOLED screen would be nice. But it's one of those things that isn't as different as going from black and white to color. It's a marginal difference.
Battery life? I charge my ipod in my car on the way to work. A better battery would be handy (for me) exactly once a year, on a trans-pacific flight. (And even then, I've got my netbook for that.)
But what people are missing is not the hardware. It's the OS of the device that simply makes it a joy to operate coupled with the thousands of apps that extend the functionality far beyond anything else currently on the market.
Here's an example: I had a Cowon D2 when they came out. It was a slick little device, did what it did well enough or so I thought. When listening to podcasts, if I had to stop in the middle I was forced to manually bookmark the spot I was at so I could resume playing at the same spot. The ipod automatically bookmarks everything you listen to. It bookmarks your videos. It removes played podcasts from the device automatically. It downloads new podcasts and puts them on the device automatically. My Cowon did none of that, and I'll be very surprised if they do it yet. |

I'm pretty sure the Cowon D2 has 'resume play' function. Maybe you didn't activate it. AFAIK, every MP3 player has had the function for a few years now. It's a basic.
Of course, the S9 has 'resume play' on video and audio.
I wouldn't want my files removed automatically after they'd been played. I might want to listen to them again.
I spend, oh, less than 20 minutes every Sunday night deleting everything I don't want off the S9 and loading what I'll want for the week ahead. Very easy. I don't even have to open any software. Just open my downloads folder, choose the files, drag and drop.
Check out the codecs supported by the S9.....in a device smaller than the Touch!

The Touch has a huge achilles heel, it doesn't support many formats. So, a lot of conversion needed. No thanks. Bothersome.
I'd say about 90% of TV shows and movies on the net are in Xvid format. So Touch users gotta convert.
Weirdly, the Touch supports x264 video. Great! Until you realize that it only supports x264 with a resolution of 640x480! Not many x264 files out there go that low. If any.
If Apple extended the audio and video support for the Touch, allowed files to be transferred within Windows, and gave it an AMOLED screen.......I'd probably go out and get one tomorrow. |

Actually, I should have explained better. Let me put it this way, I can switch between any number of videos or podcasts, and it will automatically continue playback on each one from where I left off.

They aren't deleted from your library. |

My biggest complaint with Ipod. Many people agree that iTunes is crap. I hate it when you import your library and you have song names like:
"Nirvana - Smells like Teen Spirit"
"Nirvana - In Bloom"
And then when you actually PLAY the track it automatically puts the song name to the correct:
"Smells like Teen Spirit"
"In Bloom"
Why doesn't iTunes just scan all the tracks and set the song names correctly? Why do I have to click and play every single song to get the song names to display correctly (omitting the band name)?
Another beef is the Ipod Backup. If your Itunes is auhtorized on that computer, why can't the iTunes Backup REMEMBER WHAT SONGS YOU HAD ON YOUR IPOD??!?!??!
If I gotta restore my iPod (happens maybe once every 3-6 months) I gotta go through my entire music library and copy the songs over again.
The way iTunes handles duplicate songs is retarded. Why not tell me the file path of the duplicates so I can see where on my computer it is located and decide which one I want to keep.
The freaking 1 click purchase is absolutely annoying. Apple will not give refunds. I clicked on a song to preview it, instead iTunes purchased it. AFter that, I went into my settings and turned off the "one-click" purchase real fast.
I seriously don't get it. If Apple's Leopard and Snow Leopard are such great OS's, then why does Itunes suck so much? |

| Ipods desperately need better audio control. An equalizer would be better than the crappy presets it comes bundled with. |
