If they weren't any good, they wouldn't sell would they?
'Top Gear' is a comedy/car info show and they have pointed out good Korean cars in the past. |

I remember a while ago some Brit really pissed off the Koreans by
stating that Korean cars were styled after refrigerators. Quite true
until just a little while ago.
I find Korean cars........boring! Korea has almost no cars that would
be fun to drive. (exception being that new sports car) They are all
closed roof, dark tint windowed and white, black or silver. Snooze. |

Good? I would read average. They are just not appealing in the UK where we can buy better European or Japanese models. Good for a long warranty but not much to shout at in terms of style or handling.
What Top Gear have previosuly said about Korean cars popular in Korea:
Hyundai Coupe
| Quote: |
| A rubbishy old bag of nails that has got away with it for far too long because the rest of the range used to be so crap. |
Hyundai Sonata
| Quote: |
| Apparently new but desperately off the pace mid-size saloon, the Sonata still represents Hyundai of old. Poorly styled and uncompetitive with Europes best. |
Hyundai Tuscon
| Quote: |
| SUVs are meant to be aspirational vehicles, but outside of Korea nobody aspires to own a Hyundai. The Tucson isnt all bad, but why on earth would you want one? |
Kia Soul
| Quote: |
| Funky, relatively cheap, decent dynamics and quality: just the sort of car that Kia needs to be making. |
So, they seem to be liking the new models like the Kia Soul because it is different; could even make it on the Top Gear Cool Wall...or not. That said the styling of the Sonata and Tuscon seems a step us on previous models. |

The international press are warming up to Korean cars.
The Kia Soul and Genesis have been very well received by international motor mags.
Korean car makers have never taken risks. They've always produced conservative cars for a conservative people.
But since Hyundai brought in the 10-year warranty thing......wow.....that's a winner right there. Who would turn down a decent A-to-B car with a 10 year warranty?
Now their success in the western market has given them the confidence to push the boat out a little......hence the Kia Soul...
..........but, of course, they're always looking to Japan for direction. |

| Top Gear hosts are only really happy when they are driving something worth 6 figures. I love the show, but they views on economy cars shouldn't be taken too seriously. |

Right. Top Gear is entertainment. Not to be taken seriously. I love it though. They're funny guys. It's a great show. |

| I am not of fan of koreans or anything korean....they are their own worst enemy...however....they are catching up to the big boyz and in many cases are keeping in step with the big boyz.....their cars are better than many other countries that produce cars...and they are getting international awards....and the 10 year warranty.....put your money where your mouth is other auto makers I say! |

I owned a hyundai a long time ago. Horrible lemon. Put me off car ownership, but for awhile I used to rent a car twice a month to get groceries that kind of stuff. So I used different rental shops, drove cars out of various fleets.
The Kia was the best in the econo class. The cobalt, which I got a lot, kind of sucked.
I got a hyundai once.. it felt really cramped compared to the other cars.
I got a yaris once..contrary to the commercials..it wasn't fun to drive..
The kia just felt sturdier on the road even though it was a little smaller than the cobalt.. I'm trying to remember what the model was.. I only got it 2 or 3 times, it must have been popular because they almost never had it. It wasn't a rio.. it was a 4 door hatchback..
it might have been a spectra. |

Americans think the same about Korean autos as well. (Only if they didn't buy so many Korean cars it would make sense.) Korea has an enormous opportunity to get ahead for once by developing electric or hydrogen cars. Everyone knows they are the future. The good cars come from Germany and Japan. The cheap cars will come from China before we know it. Korea would lose all niches they have right now in the next five to ten years (to China). Things will be really scary when everyone starts making fun of Chinese rides.
BTW, the thing I hate the most about Korean cars is the paints they use. Awful colors in low quality. No wonder most cars in Seoul are either white, gray, or black. |

True.
But, they have said nice things about the Ford Focus and the Ford Mondeo. Every once in a while they do reviews of cars that the majority of people can actually afford. They also quite like the new VW Scirocco.
They will probably give the Kia Forte Koup a good review in their next series. |
