I've just arrived in Suncheon and have been here a month. I'll be getting my internet access at home any day now. I was just wondering how strict Korea is about downloading stuff. Back home (U.S.) I've frequented many music blogs and have downloaded several albums. I usually mostly restrict myself to downloading old, out-of-print LP's.

Will all of my downloads be closely monitored by my internet provider? Would using a proxy server be effective? Do they only care if it's Korean music that has been downloaded? (There are a few Korean albums I wouldn't mind tracking down.) I usually download stuff via Rapidshare or Megaupload; would my visiting those sites be tracked and recorded? Or are they only going after the owners of message boards and people who upload files?

I was here from 2001-2002 and at that time this was not an issue. I don't know how or if things have changed since then.

i read somewhere that Koreans consume more internet porn per capita than any other nation, so i don't think you'll have a problem with filesharing/downloading stuff.

There are websites where you can even download it directly from a Korean server. Allegedly it takes about 5 minutes to download a whole porno movie, but I wouldn't know about that myself.

Are you worried about being traced?
bittorrent is usually monitored for Korean copyright material.
Download all you want.
May I suggest Usenet for your big download fix? (Koreans don't even know what that is Laughing )

They only care if you're pirating Korean stuff in a foreign country. You guys see the big deal the media made about some Chinese guys illegally copying and selling DVDs of 해운대?

I heard something about the porn industry suing a bunch of Koreans for all that porn and also about people receiving warnings from their ISPs in Korea for downloading the regular pirated stuff.

With that said, I never have been warned and download tons of popular stuff right from thepiratebay. My korean girlfriend downloads all kinds of korean tv shows and music and hasn't gotten in any trouble either.

We haven't even gotten into designer bag ripoffs and clothes, those are great too. Look everyone I'm wearing clothes from Diesel!

This thread is a joke, right?

They don't care. Not even a little bit. Download/upload to your heart's content (or your conscience's limit).
