Korea, unhappy with its poor international standing in the 'nation brand' index has decided that it's taking its ball and going home. Rather than make the many necessary reforms that the country needs to raise its image internationally, it has decided that things are just fine. All it needs to do is change the rules governing how countries are ranked. And guess who gets to write the new rules that will determine Korea's international standing. Why, Korea of course. Rolling Eyes

Korea the sulky adolescent strikes again.

I've never ever seen a nation so obsessed with "branding", and so disappointed when it discovers that the rest of the world still sees it as "crappy" (even if erroneously)

what do they think a climb up in "branding" will accomplish?

thousands upon thousands of new tourists streaming into Korea instead of going to China, Japan or SE Asia?

never.

better global sales for Korean choebols?

nope - those are already determined by pricing and quality reviews of the products themselves.

it's a great way to piss away milllions of won on brand 'expert' advice, etc etc.

was in NY central park yesterday with a russian bike taxi driver, korean wife with me.

convo went like this:

so where are you guys from?

Korea and the UK

South or North Korea?

South

Is the south the one with the communists and the nukes

me (laughing) no, thats the North.

If even russians don't know the difference betweem North and South Korea, Koreas global image must really be in the toilet

the existence of Kim Jung Il's "Korea" is by far the single biggest thing screwing up all of these "branding" surverys and campaigns, etc.

obviously when someone says "Korea" it's the first thing they think of.

If you can't win on a fair playing field, change the rules. You'll never lose again.

This is all about telling the people (Koreans) what they want to hear about Korea, whether it's true or not.

Got to love those rose coloured glasses.
