Hey guys....
I was wondering, is there anyone in out there who has managed to get an F5 visa and who is not married to a Korean national? Or is it impossible?

| A colleague of mine got an F-2 without being married to a Korean. If you are at the same work place for five years, you can qualify. I would imagine after putting in the two years that way he should qualify for an F-5 (although he isn't sure if he'll try or not). |

| The F-2 is a sponsored visa (wife, or, in the case of my colleague, a friend). The F-5 is a permanent resident visa where you are your own sponsor. You have to be an F-2 for two years to get the F-5. |

| Ok, how long does an f2 visa last? Is it possible to get an f2 visa on a goverment program like SMOE? Also, how can u obtian an f2 visa? |

An F-2 can last as long as you're sponsored. Many, if not most F-2s go for an F-5 when they are able. As mentioned, if you stay at the same job for at least five years you can qualify. You obtain the F-2 by applying when you qualify. |

| Can someone pls clarify for me? Is it 5 years in the same job (e.g. teaching, admin, etc.) or 5 years with the same employer (sponsor) for F-2 (without marrying a Korean) eligibility? How about if you switched jobs/employers, but still stayed resident in Korea for 5 years cumulative? |

You have to be with the same employer for five years. |

| Nemo, go listen to bassexpander's podcast called "The Midnight runner" he had a podcast about F5s, and the guy on there was talking about helping other foreigners get the F5, he left his contact info, listen to it and maybe that will help you out. |

I can safely say that after jumping through ALL their hoops over a period of many years in Korea AND being rejected for one lame excuse after another that it is NOT possible for a foreigner who is not married to a Korean to obtain an F5 (in spite of the fact that the book says you can).

| I've just spent 40 minutes on the HiSeoul website trying to find the specific information about the F-2, but no luck. Anyone know where I can find who qualifies for an F-2? I had thought it was just a 'marriage visa', but BlueLake is talking like its available to anyone sponsored by a korean? This sounds great, if its possible. |

I'm speaking from my colleague's experience, so I know it's possible. Originally, it was just a marriage visa, but the gov't has made changes along the way to include others who wish to live in Korea long-term. My colleague didn't even try to get the visa--he went into the immi office to extend his E-2 and the officer there told him he qualified for an F-2, so he got it. Whether or not he gets an F-5 in another year remains to be seen... |

Very interesting....alot for ESL teachers to think about.
The problem is most ESL teachers usually stay at their up for 1-3 years max.
I would think this would apply more for PS teachers and Uni lecturers, many hagwon teachers only stay at their jobs for the specified time I mentioned above.
But I know many unis limit their foreign staff to 3 years, in which time he/she has to go look for another job, get another E2 and start from the beginning again. But I hear about PS teachers staying in their school district for up to 6 years.
If this is indeed possible, why don't many ESL teachers go for it? |

| Hmm...I just called 1345 and they told me it's not possible (the E-2 to F-2 thing). I'll get my other half to call and ask. |
