I was talking to a young lady from a recruitment company today.
I told her that I would have preferance for a hagwon which she seemed a little bit downheartened by. She was lovely to me on the phone but told me to ring her back if I changed my mind about workking in a public school. She also said if I would mind being the only foreigner in a school so Im guessing the only position she has lined up for me is a public school as the only foreigner.
Im thinking of changing my mind to be honest because she said that it can be hard to get a private job right now and from applying for jobs for around a month now; I would tend to agree with her. I've read threads on here with the public/hagwon debate and the consensus seems to be that it realy just depends on what kind of school you happen to end up with. You just have to minimise the risk as best you can I suppose.

I was wondering though; if a public school is looking to recruit someone now; does this signal that somebody else has maybe left just as there contract has started (September) as this would be a clear signal to stay away I would imagine.

It could be someone ran, it could be that they just happened to ended their contract a little later.

Here is the important thing. Can you talk to the teacher there?

I have no idea to be honest whether it's SMOE or EPIK. I have asked her for more information on the job and she wasn't very specific about the job in question once I mentioned that I would have prefered to work in a hagwon. I emailed the lady back and mentioned that I might change my mind if the conditions are favourable so I'll let you all know when I find out.

Remind her there are scores of other recruiters in Seoul, if she's only going to offer you the jobs she wants you to take...you can take your business elsewhere. Or say nothing and do it anyways, dealing exclusively with one recruiter requires a level of trust and confidence that recruiters axiomatically do not deserve.

Turue. I think most recruiters can't be trusted. Yesterday I had one call me about a job he had for me. He had seen my resume on Dave's. He asked me if I would send him my resume and asked me when I could send it. I told him I could send it sometime today. About 2 hours later, I had an appointment at the dentist. While I was in the dentist's chair, I heard my phone ringing and ringing. Of course, I was not able to answer the phone. Then, right after I left the dentist's office, he called again while I was walking around in Coex. He asked me if I would be OK working in Suwon and he askled me when was I going to send him my resume. I told him around 7 or 8PM. I was clear across town and I don't walk down the street with a computer. Rolling Eyes That joker proceeded to call me right back so I ignored his call. He called me about 10 more times in an hour. You just have to know he has a TERRIBLE job for me. A decent job would have tons of people wanting it, and he wouldn't need to keep calling me. Then, first thing this morning at 9AM, he called and woke me up. I didn't answer and just turned my phone off. I got up and turned it back on around 12 noon and of course, he called again. That must be some job he has available. What is it? Satan's hagwon of Suwon?

I was going to send him my resume as soon as I got back from the dentist. But since he kept ringing me over and over like that, I decided not to trust him. What a freak!

Oh, and in August, I had a recruiter call me and try to get me to go interview that same day, within like 3 hours, for a school that is all over the blacklist. So, when she gave my number to the school, I wouldn't answer my phone when they called. They proceeded to call me everyday for 4 days in a row. Stuff like this shows you the school has to be bad. I didn't use my money to fly over here to find a job to take crap. I will never use my money to fly over here and look for a job again either. I didn't know the market was this flooded or I would have just kept sitting at my parents' house, saving my money. I agree with another poster I saw on here, who said coming to Korea to look for a job is total lunacy and how he lost thousands of dollars in doing so. me, too. Also, people, there is more than just KOREEEEEEEEEA....There is a whole world of countries out there.
