I am reviewing an application(not contract) that wants me to sign to agree to a 900,000 KRW deposit for an apartment.
Is this an upfront cost (pay before I start working) or will this be taken from my paycheck.
FYI: This is my second teaching job in Korea and I am trying to get this job thru the Koriva consulting.
Any advice about GEPIK or Korvia would be deeply appreciated. |

You will pay in 3 installments after each of first 3 monthly paychecks. |

Like Andrew said, it's 3 installments from your first three paychecks (300,000 each month for three months). You will get this back at the end of your contract. |

What I got angry about was that I am not taking the housing as my wife and I have our own apartment. However, they stated that we still needed to pay the deposit. For what? If they are not responsible for the apartment why do they need to have the deposit money? They came back and stated that it is for other things not related to the apartment. I stated that this was not in the contract. Regardless, they stated that they would take the money and I would get it after the contract. Again, what are they thinking? |

Yeah that sounds like BS man. They probably just take it to stop you walking away from the job. |

You have to pay a deposit for an apartment you're not going to live in or you have a pay a deposit "for other things". Did they explain what it was for?
I turned down several public school jobs because their corrupt housing scheme requires that you stay in the housing that they provide, they don't get any kickbacks for having employees who have their own housing. |

BS. It's only for housing. Holding money from your paycheck is not exactly on the legal side of things. |

I think that they are stating that it is for any legal issues that you might be involved in the future. That is BS I am an F2 visa holder my school is not responisible for my actions my wife and I are.
But they are not moving on this issue. Not a big deal with the money as I get it back, but I am more angry with the lack of explaination. |

I was in GEPIK for three years and I did not pay the deposit. When I heard about it, I rolled my eyebrows at my co-teacher and they did not make me pay it. My former GEPIK school thought it was bogus. Each GEPIK school seems to have some flexibility as to whether or not they collect it. Why don't you wait a day or so and then go and talk with your school when things have calmed down? |

I got a job with GEPIK through Korvia as well. I was so happy with my school and situation, I'm really glad I went with Korvia.
The 900k gets taken out of your paycheck in 300k per month installments. So for 3 months you'll have -300k taken from your paycheck. You get it back at the end of your contract. So it's no biggie.
I understand why they do it because they probably had an issue in the past with employees leaving the country and leaving them with bills or ruining/selling things in their apartment. |
