A few threads on this forum have given me the impression that to rent a car with a Korean licence, you need to have held that licence for at least a year. I want to rent a car next month, but I don't have my K-licence yet. I was planning on going down next week. Will this be a problem when I try to rent a car? On the Avis website it mentions that you need to have had at least 1 year's driving experience, but it doesn't mention whether this needs to be at home or specifically in Korea.

Any thoughts?

I rented from here: http://samwonrentcar.net/ about a year ago. That's when I had my license for about 8 months. It's true that most of the bigger car rental places (like Avis) require that you have a Korean license for at least a year.

I'm not sure but don't you have to 'trade-in' your license from your home country to get an international one in Korea? If not, you can show your previous license to the rental place and maybe that'll be proof enough that you have more than a year's experience.

This is true.

Be sure that you photocopy both sides of your home country license before you go to get your Korean license. If you go to Avis with your new Korean license AND a copy of your home country license, that should be enough to get you the car. (You'll want to confirm this with Avis before you show up there, but that was what I did.)

I was denied because by the time I went to rent the car my original license (which I still had on me as I refused to give it to the license people) had expired and they wouldn't count my previous years of experience. I attempted to explain the illogic of their argument as I clearly had a foreign license and Korean license with overlapping time lines and was given my Korean license because of my foreign license.

The best thing to do in Korea is have both a valid international license (either that of keep your home license up to date for that year) and a Korean license for your first year.

You will have no problems then.
