So the other day without warning, I was jostled from my relaxing morning routine of doing everything but work when my VP came and told me to go to the cafeteria.

No problem I thought it was just going to be another brief meaningless ceremony of some sort.

Oh no brother, this was an all out assault on the senses. An elementary singing contest for 4 (four) straight hours and guess who was the judge?

I had a slight hangover as usual and after about 20 minutes, I literally could not take it anymore.

I snuck out and went back to my classroom where the principal again came to haul me back to the horror.

I am not exaggerating people. It was the most painful experience I've had in recent memory and I can assure you, I've had many.

ASK YOUR CO-TEACHER IF THERE ARE ANY TYPE OF EVENTS AS SUCH PLANNED IN THE FUTURE!!!! When there are, call in sick. You can thank me later.

It took every bit of strength I had to feign interest. After an hour I started to pinch myself very hard in order to deflect the pain from my ears to my body. I counted every tile on the ceiling 10 times.

After the concert was over, I felt as though I had just run a marathon twice.

You have been forewarned!

Without consulting me, a local organization appointed me as judge in an English speaking contest in which some of the contestants were my students.
I told them that I didn't think that was fair, because I couldn't be an unbiased judge.
But they insisted, and I gave in.

Next year, I'll play it smart and refuse to take a ride to the contest.

To the OP: Well done, mate. More fodder for the anti-English Spectrum crowd.

You do d1ck all in the morning(as usual). You're hungover(as usual). Then you bugger off after 20 mins. of "duty". Kudos.

Sure, the powers that be could've given you a heads up(but they probably figured you wouldn't show up then-with good reason). And if the kids weren't singing in English, then putting you in as a judge doesn't make a whole lot of sense.

But other than that, you're obviously a waste of rations & oxygen.

Gee ... You really care about your students and school. I hope you are returning home after this contract. Maybe you could do all the NTs and your students a favor and leave now.

How you so blithely mention you were hungover should bother even yourself. Have a little respect for your job as a teacher if anything.

Funnily enough, I just got out of being a judge in our regional English drama contest, because I told them that I would vote my school's play the best.

It didn't matter though, because on the day of the contest, the POE cancelled - siting swine flu. My kids were literally in tears. Who lets kids practice for 2 months and then cancels on the day? Sparkling.

hee hee, I feel your pain.

I once came in also hungover at my last public elementary school to be told it was sports day and that I was the Master of Ceremonies...

They aksed me what I had prepared as I would be introducing every event to the parents and also commentating on every event!!

I had NO PRIOR WARNING WHATSOEVER!!!

I was like

Me - 'Uh? When did you know about this.'

Handler - Two weeks ago.

Me - Why didn't you tell me then? Then I coud have prepared something...

Handler - it is your job to know. You should've known that you would have to do this.

Me - UH? How can I know about something that I have no knowlege off? If No one tells me it's going to be sports day and that I'm going to have to be MC, how can I know?'

Handler - it is your DUTY!

Me - I would have to be psychic. You know esp? I am not. It is NOT my job to know the future! It's impossible.

Handler - why do you say such things! Sometimes you sound so crazy!!

Me- Get the hell out of my office. YOU are crazy, actually REAL crazy. I will never talk to you again without the vice principal present because it's like trying to talk to someone from an alien planet.

Good luck to the new Teacher at Hogok elementary school working under that psycho cow. Rest of the staff are lovely as pie though, but the handler is ACTUALLY INSANE...

Haha. I love the responses to this post. How many Korean teacher message board/blog posts contain the exact same thing except in Korean? OP, you obviously lucked out. I bet the taechers had a meeting to decide who was to be the judge and no one wanted to do it, so it fell to you. It seems like the music teacher/teachers would be the logical choice.
