I don't know what to think, but I could use the advice. It's a potential good thing.

My wife, daughter (3 years old) and I are US citizens, and I'm teaching in Jukjeon-dong, Bundang. We were sitting by the fountain near the subway in Jeonga-dong the other night when a man approached us and asked to have our daughter photographed for his dance studio. We told him we couldn't make a decision right there, and to leave his card.

Here's what he was:

1. Older (maybe 50-ish)
2. Well-dressed
3. Very polite, but
4. Very keen on getting our daughter photographed in a ballet costume
4. English-proficient
5. Carrying a sealed box containing a child's ballet costume, which he showed us.

Here's what he told us:
1. He represented the Eurotard Company, Alpharetta, Georgia
2. He owns a dance studio
3. It's on the ninth floor of the Paragon building, which was visible from
where we sat
4. We could visit any time and see everything before making a decision.
5. We could be present at all times
6.We were welcome to name a per-photo fee
7. He would need about 20 photos
8. The photos would all be studio displays, not for outside advertising purposes.
9. Of course, that we would need to sign a release.

You see? It all sounds positive. He was up front and forthright with answers to our questions. When I said I didn't know anything about fees, he quoted something a lot higher than I would have thought of saying, but ultimately, that's not the most important thing.

Has anyone had experience with this sort of thing? I know that that's a wealthy area, so the whole thing could be right on, but I wanna know who knows what about this, because I know nothing. But if dance school owners are anything like hagwon directors, well. . .

On the other hand, it seems that, income-wise, a good day in the dance studio getting photographed beats a month in the classroom teaching English. . .beats it x2, in fact. That's why I have to be a detail hunter about this.

Does your daughter have an entertainment/model visa? if not, accepting money would likely somehow violate your E2 (if that is what you're on). That being said, chances of being caught are low.

I wouldn't do it. How do you know what your daughter's images will be used for. Heck, they could be circulated in paedophile circles.

How much money are we talking? This reminds me of the scene in Bruno where Sacha Baron Cohen interviews parents who want to get modeling/casting jobs for their children.

Although, I would wager that these photographs WOULD be used for advertising, somewhere down the line. Especially if they get a good response from the people who come into his shop.

In any case, so what? You're beautiful child has her face and tu-tu'ed body plastered around the city. I would feel proud.

Just make sure you see EVERY shot he takes and have final say in what he saves and what he deletes. Cool.

Dude, this is a child, YOUR CHILD, are you so up for money that you have to do this?? Is it the money??
1. If you do not need the money, forget about it.
2. You always got to realize that any deal is not the same here. There is always an X factor... who knows what this man might do with the photos. Who knows how he will take them. Who knows if you get into legal stuff for accepting money., who knows, it could be a sham. Just walk away, go to the park with your kid, and enjoy your freedom.
