I'd say SLP have a good rep. I worked for them as my first job and they were fine as haggies go...
GnB is a lottery... depends on the owner....
Ecc / YBM are supposed to be ball breakers....
I'd go with after school if I were you...
Same problems as haggies, but better hours... |

SLP- "Slave Labour Programme" are pretty awful. (I worked at Nowon SLP in 2000. But they did have mormon lesbians which at least offered a modicum of amusement. |

Not fair to judge one franchise based on another.
The one I worked at was decent.
It is a lottery though and not everyone's a winner...! |

True, they're franchises so who knows. Some standard (?) practices like 2 hour classes and going through the textbook as slow as possible are pretty unattractive. Again, that may have only been the place I was but there's no way in hell I'd go back anywhere near a hagwon franchise. |

Hagwon "goodness" all depends on the owner and the other teachers, mainly the owner/principal/person in charge.
If you read a lot of posts about one chain, like Wonderland, you might want to avoid it just to make sure you don't get in one of the bad ones, playing it safe.
But just because you hear about a great wonderful school, doesn't mean the other ones will be great. If you hear about a good school, make sure you pay attention to the campus along with the name.
That being said, one of the best sources of info would be current teachers (but take it with a grain of salt). |

Unless you have the visa freedom to not be tied to a job ultimately it's all a crapshoot. |

I thought I was at the only good Wonderland in Korea... I was wrong. It was pretty much like the rest of them from what I heard. I was doing great until my boss tole me on Christmas (10 months in) that I was the worst teacher... he did the same thing to another teacher too. In the 5 years he's run that place it's lost like 5-7 teachers to midnight runs. |

same can be said for ecc. i worked at a great one my first time over. my second run with a different ecc wasn't as solid in terms of staff and organization, but i did finish by 4:30 everyday. |

Independant hakwans can be good, but it is still a crap shoot. Public school is uncomparably better in every way, but you still hear horror stories about pyscotic handlers... In general ps is WAY better though in every aspect. After School is great for those with abit of experience who know how to milk the decent pay and low hours by not being strict and doing lots of activities and games to keep the kiddies happy... Haggaies really aren't that great. Though I know people who don't mind them, even one friend (true) who left A UNI JOB (the ESL Holy Grail) to go back to hakwan teaching as she didn't like the grading protocol at the university.... |
