if you are leaving without plans on coming back, before your contract is up, do you need a letter of release at the airport to show immigration or any other kind of paperwork? |

Yes of course. If you dont have a letter of release, they will detain you in their airport lockup until your employer shows up. You will go to the immigration ofice where you will be fitted with a GPS ankle braclet so they will know if you stray from your job again. |

You are free to leave at any time, (unless you have criminal charges pending). There is no need for a letter of release to leave Korea.
A letter of release is useful to obtain a new job in Korea under some circumstances. If you are not coming back, it would be a useless document. |

Did you get your diploma back? I would hate to hear that you are leaving without your diploma. |

You only need a LOR when you want to change schools. Otherwise, just go to the airport with ticket and baggage in-hand and have a good flight. Unless you are wanted by the authorities, all I expect they will do, as another poster said, is to cancel your visa in your passport and confiscate your ARC. |

They will likely fine you (100,000 won or thereabouts) if you don't. |
