|
|
So a group of us teachers are doing the Thailand thing in December for our winter break. I know it's a popular spot for expats, so does anyone have any tips on what to check out/what to avoid? My group was suggesting that we not put too much into finding hotels in advance so we can leave our options open and hop around a bit. I know A LOT of teachers have their break at this time and am anxious about not being able to find something if we go that route. Thoughts? I'd love to hear about your experience! |

Forget Phuket.
Koh Phi Phi is full of half constructed hotel and construction sites and wanna be hippies, atms and burger kings every ten metres.
KohSamui is fabulous, still has that small island getaway feel to it, is drop dead gorgeous, easy to get around and whilst Chaweng beach is touristy and has a maccy d and all that (nothing wrong with that once in a while if you need it) Lamai beach to the south is stunning and nice and quiet.
I heard Koh Chang is great too but I haven't been there.
Samui though was paradise
should be in travel forum though.... |

You won't have problems getting a place to sleep if you are not picky about your accommodation (Koh Phangan the week of the Full Moon Party being the exception). Personally I have never made a guesthouse reservation anywhere in SEA and have never had a problem getting a room, but I generally stay in basic places without A/C or hot water. I would recommend Northern Thailand over the islands if you have limited time, but this all depends on the type of vacation you want to have. Finally, next time use the travel forum. |

Don't even think about buying any gems or Jewelery. There are all kinds of scams involving taxi drivers and tuk tuk drivers. Beware of people with near perfect English hanging around at Cultural sites offering good deals on Jewlery. There are no government run Jewelery shops.
Don't accept food from strangers sometimes it's drugged. be careful.
Don't let a taxi driver help you find a room. Find it yourself. There are always vacancies even during high seasons.
Don't buy any tailor made goods touted by taxi drivers.
Watch out for pick pocketers at the entrance to Nana plaza most of them are Ladyboys. Ladyboys are popular around red light districts the majority of them are harmless. Don't piss them off. They can get really violent and they fight like men.
Don't get into a fight with the locals. You won't have a clean fight and it might leave permanently disabled.
Don't fall in love with a bargirl. They are only interested in your money. The minute you board your flight they will hook up with another guy. Guarenteed don't try to rescue anybody. You are not the White Knight you are just another monger |

Bollocks the beaches on Samui are only marginally better than Pattaya. Go to Aou Nang beach in Krabbi |

I liked Samui the most out of my trip around Southern Thailand. The island is easy to get around if you get a bike, quite alot to do, beaches seemed fine and there's a good bit of nightlife around Chaweng beach if that's what you're up for.
Krabi is all right as well, but personally I found Aou Nang boring. Other than eating and shopping not much else to do. Phi Phi sucked though, well overrated, smelly as hell too. |

You're full of it. I never saw any deck chairs set up there, it was gorgeous.
Your assertion about Samui being on par with Pattaya is bollox and you know it and you know that I know you know it, so give up already. |

There are better beaches than Samui. Go to Au Nang beach. It's surrounded by huge rock cliffs. Go to Railay beach in Krabbi. I suggest you check out the beaches on the Andaman Sea. Go to Hong island the water is so clear you can see the fish and they are very colorful. Parrotfish |

I went to Krabi earlier this year and I had a good time. I wanted quiet and laid back and that's exactly what I got. For a more spectacular beach, Railay is close by and if you're really hard up for fun and noise, Ko Samui is pretty close.
I haggled to get a good price at a Best Western chain hotel, but in the offseason, Krabi can be dead. But hey, I wanted to relax and that's exactly what I did. Ao Nang was nice in that respect but does have its share of bars, though not on the same scale as Ko Samui.
Screw Pattaya and Phuket, both places are basically for guys who can't get laid on their own. |

Sure. I've been too some of those.
Just saying for an all round experience for a newbie to thailand - great beaches, nice semi jungled mountians inland, a few touristy things to do, decent partying at night if you want it, good diving - Samui is a great place for the first timer to go imo... |
