This is very hard for me to ask so I hope that you will all be kind. My question is very serious.

I am a young man considering going to Korea. I also am into BDSM. I want to make it clear that I do not do anything illegal or non-consensual or unsafe. It's nothing crazy like you sometimes see in movies or whatever. I am wondering if there are BDSM communities and clubs in Korea, and if they are open to people like me who only speak English. I am also wondering if there are any legal issues about BDSM in Korea. I keep my activities fairly private and do not flaunt it, so I am not so much worried about my job security (although I understand there may be a risk if I was somehow outed, but that applies almost everywhere in the world). But I just wanted to check on the legal issues.

Again I hope you will all be kind and that this question does not seem inappropriate or disrespectful. I do not know where else I could ask such a question. I do not expect anyone to out themselves on this forum, but if anyone has advice, please send me a private message or even an email from an anonymous account. I could go a year without this, but I would rather not if possible. Thank you in advance for your assistance and respectfulness.

OP -- you should hook up with Reise-ohne-Ende. Maybe you two could start the revolution.

In all seriousness though, surely you know that these kinds of things extend beyond cultural boundaries. It's just about how open one can be in any given culture. It's here -- it's got to be here. Whether it's organized into a subculture or not, I haven't the foggiest idea. And you probably won't have an easy time finding out if you don't speak Korean. But I'm positive that given the right kind of persistence, you'll be able to sort something out for yourself.

Who is Reise-ohne-Ende?

I do know there must be people interested in it, but depending on how accepted or oppressed the idea is I'm not sure if there would be a culture willing to accept strangers, or even if it would be safe (in the legal sense) for me to become involved.

Thank you for your reply, I was afraid people would think this was a joke or something.

She's another new poster here looking to come to Korea who's a little into the rough stuff.

You can be fairly certain that oppressed is what to expect on this one. Or perhaps "repressed" is a better word.

By "in a legal sense", I'm not really sure what you mean. Unless your preferences are pretty extreme, I'm not sure how the law would come into play.

As far as a culture willing to accept strangers, Korea isn't really known for welcoming foreigners into their private business. But then again, those who are bdsm minded don't usually tend to have traditional mindsets or hangups, non?

You're just going to have to do the fieldwork on this one. Maybe put a post up on Craigslist and see what comes of it or something. It would be a lot easier, again, if you were able to search the internet in Korean. Obviously.

Yes, I think "repressed" is the word I was looking for, thank you.

I have always heard in BDSM communities to be careful in foreign countries, as some acts that are perfectly safe and legal here are illegal in other places. Especially as an alien I would not want to break any laws.

I have done some fieldwork already and I do plan to do more, but as you say it is significantly more difficult when one does not speak or read Korean. Thank you for the advice. I will keep searching and perhaps another BDSM-minded person on this forum will have tips for where to look.

One piece of advice: you don't want to be anywhere other than Seoul. Korea and Seoul are two different places. Outside of Seoul you will find nothing of what you are seeking. (not that it isn't there, but that it would be nigh-impossible for anyone to locate)

Bizzarely I thought the same about Japan but I think alot of it there is either behind closed doors or is the paid for variety...

I went to the 'gay' bar area in Tokyo and I have to say there was more happening on homo hill in Itaewon...

Um, there is a website called utopia or something where you can find out about 'alternative scenes' in Korea, but I can't remember exactly...

I'm not sure if you're into bsdm in a hetro / homo / bi way...

I kind of can't imagine many Korean women being into that scene...

Gay guys and bi's though I'm sure are more experiemental and there seem to be a fair number in Seoul.

Yeah outside of Seoul though- forgettaboutit
