I read him very occassionally in the Herald Tribune. But never had much interest in him, mostly because I don't really get into wordsmiths who make that the focus of their columns.
Of course, as a conservative speechwriter, he coined some fairly memorable phrases. I notice that he was still writing his "words and phrases"-type column in the Tribune as of quite recently, and it seemed coherent enough.

I will miss his etymological explanations. To this day I occasionally have trouble with gerunds and participles and have a column of his handy from years back laying it out!
The right wing in the states has lost another intellectual. Sad to see that old tradition dying. |
