|
|
My co-teacher just handed me a booklet that is basically a bunch of attendance sheets for the year. According to her, the office of Education wants to know the dates that the foreign teachers attended school over the year.
Why?
Basically what occurred is that a number of foreign teachers left on vacation, when they weren't supposed to, and therefore they will have to return all the money they were paid over that period. So if anyone notices a huge deduction/gets a booklet that they are supposed to record all their days for the year....that's why.
So if you work in Chungnam and left the country outside of weekends or the vacation times in your contract (basically on a weekday) you might be in some hot water. As for yours truly, no need to be concerned as he plays by the rulebook.

Are they demanding to see peoples passports? That's the only way I could see them actually knowing when people went abroad. |

I got asked that as well when I had to put in for my renewal back in June. I just told them I went in every day and that was that. There was no checking or anything, just my word (and in that case it was true) Now if they asked me about the summer break thats a different story. |

They got all the data from immigration. They knew when i left the country and when i came back(what flights i took and where i went). Also got the attendance sheet and had to spend a few hours signing in for the past several months( ).
Will see what happens... |

I don't really understand what this is about.
You might get in trouble if you didn't show up to work on a workday when you had work and were supposed to be at work?
And you don't get paid for it?
Who could imagine such a thing?
Dear god.... |

I bet they are P.O.'ed because people gave them the finger when they said, "No leaving because of Swine Flu."
There wasn't anything legal they could do about it.
This is their attempt to save face. |

Actually it's about NOT showing up to desk-warm...this was during school vacation.
And you don't get paid for it?
The problem is that they WERE paid for it.
Who could imagine such a thing?
Clear enough now?
Dear god.... |
And my announcement was just a heads-up so we don't get like 20 angry posts asking why their schools are deducting money from their paychecks. |

Christ. Can you just slow down and read my post again and come back when you've calmed down a bit?
Thanks for clearing everything up for me. |

This already happened at my school. Here is what I was able to find out. The official contracts from my province states that a person gets a "two week home visit" during the summer. However, for the seven years that I have been at my school, this has never been enforced.
Apparently an official memo arrived to the school at the end of last semester announcing a change in enforment policy. However, my co-teacher did not read the memo, so the other foreigner and I went off on our vacations as usual.
We got back and this semester began. The co-teacher got contacted by the board of education asking for the dates that we were out of the country. Now, I must mention that the other NET is NOT hired through the board of education, he is hired directly by the school, but apparently THAT didn't matter.
For those days that we were out of the country past our 2 weeks, that pay was deducted from this month's (September's) paycheck. If we had stayed in-country, there would have been no deductions. However, we were not informed of this until just a few weeks ago, when the proverbial doggie dung hit the fan....
My school went all the way back to last winter's vacation and deducted the number of days over the allotted amount also....
I have no problem with the board of education enforcing this, I DO have a problem with them NOT informing ME beforehand! My co-teacher was responsible for getting this information to me and the other teacher, and she did not do that. The school was totally aware of our plans, noone said a word, except "Have a great time."
Personally, I think the whole thing was handled very, very badly. Just my two-cents worth. |

It's a public school thang.

In the summer vacations foriegners get 7 days or some get 14 days paid vacation, I don;t remember, which is weird as I've been doing it for 3 yrs.... . But their school is usually closed for an extra 2 or three weeks. Some make their foriegn teachers actualyl come in to do NOTHING. Others however (this has always been my case) just say to you 'you don;t have to come in to school but you must stay in Korea and 'prepare materials / lesson plans etc...' So of course a lot of foriegners go 'yay! 3 wks extra vacay! I'm of to Thailand whoo whooop!'
And you don't get paid for it?
Yes, you used to get paid for it. and you'd just lie about having gone to Thailand and say you stayed in your apt making materials etc. Nice huh?
Who could imagine such a thing?
But now it seems they're wising up to the game. It is stupid though.. I mean waegook goes to thailand and does no prep work or waegook stays in Korea and does no prep work is the reality of it. not much difference is there...?
Dear god.... |
anyway, hope that clears it up. I don't know why they don't either extend the ft's paid vacation or actually give us some actual work to do in this limbo time - wait, no please don't do that - (most of us like moi have been doing this for enough years not to really need that many new materials, plans etc....) Don't know why they wont just give us more vacay time like the K teachers.... |

Actually, that does clear things up. As soon as you mentioned leaving the country during desk warming time, I understood, as I am also at a PS. The original post was quite muddled, making it sound like the OE was on the hunt for teachers who just randomly didn't show up for work. |

Hey, at least he didn't post random words in Korean in order to show off!! Phew, thank God for small mercies, huh?
OP, I salute you. Giving that heads up was a noice thing to do.
p.s. I understood. |

Sorry OP but to be fair the following -
Quote: |
Basically what occurred is that a number of foreign teachers left on vacation, when they weren't supposed to, and therefore they will have to return all the money they were paid over that period. Sounds as though a bunch of foriegners upped and took a vacay during working time or non scheduled vacay time. The missunderstanding is easy enough and only those with experience in the ps system would understand (though to be fair to the OP - he did target his post to a specific audience..)
Lord I must be bored today to be writing airy fairy cr*p such as this... Right I'm gonna make some Flashcards!!!! |
