|
|
My friend is a hagwon owner.
He just started hunting for employees for the next month. He put up the ad and had 400 applications by the weekend, some from abroad and quite a few from within Korea. For one position.
I think that for those of us planning to stay an extra year after this one, we'll need to have pretty good connections. I'm lucky enough to have a few fallback plans (first dibs at a friend's hagwon) but I'm still worried about what is going to happen.
Can anyone else testify to this? |

Tons of 22 year old college grads are finding jobs with ease.
These threads are pointless. |

The job was for a Native Teacher. They were all foreigners from the US, Canada, etc.
Some were already here and quite a few were in their home countries.

Well, it means that many of us (you included) might have our days in Korea numbered. I wouldn't say pointless at all. |

| It might also be the specifics of his contract that lured so many job applicants. |

| 400 applicants for a Hagwon job? Sorry, but I'm gonna have to call BS. I've met plenty of people who are getting public school jobs there first year out of uni, with no experience abroad (teaching english or otherwise), and I'd imagine Hagwon jobs are even easier to come by. There'll still be plenty of jobs for us, especially if we're willing to verture out of the greater Itaewon or Hongdae areas. |

I know those.
2.2 mil per month for newbies, negotiable for everyone else. Housing (nice apartments with 10 mil down and 500k per month in rent paid by school).
Teaching hours are usually 2:00pm-8:30pm, teachers are required to be there at 1:00pm...
Its a perfectly average hagwon in my opinion.

I was implying that it had something to do with the economic recession. The last time I looked for a job it was easy. From what I've been hearing, it is getting harder and harder.
My friend isn't the kind to lie, either. He's not a Korean owner, he is from New Zealand. |

Why? If you are performing well at your job and you work for a reputable employer, then what should you be concerned about? If your employer would kick out an experienced teacher in favour of a cheaper newbie, then they are not really worth working for IMO. |

I'm on my second contract with a public school. You know very well how rare it is to stay in one location for more than a few years in Korea, even if you are a good teacher.
I was thinking of moving to an adult hagwon or a middle school because I don't really like high school kids. |

| Well, I recently started a new job, and went through the hiring process at home (I spent the summer home after working for 2 years). I was bombarded with job offers to work at Hogwans, but I stuck to my guns and waited until an ideal public school offer came about. Granted that may have alot to do with my experience, but still, 400 applicants for a Hogwan job seems like alot. Where abouts is it located? In a highly desireable location? |

Not really. Its in a beautiful part of Ilsan. Ilsan is a great city but no one considers it desirable because of how far away from Seoul it is. |

| Not knowing the specifics of the OP's situation I won't call BS about the 400 applicants, but I really don't think its that hard to get a job in Korea, but it is an employers market right now. People I know who have started new jobs recently, even those with lots of experience have not been very successful in negotiating higher pay and more vacation. From what I have heard getting a good job in the more desirable parts of Seoul is fairly difficult for those with limited experience. Even those with experience are getting fewer offers and worse conditions in popular locations. However, out in the provinces it is still very much a teacher's market. While it might be harder to get a great job in a popular location ESL jobs in Korea are by no means drying up, especially for those of us with experience teaching here. |

Lol, what they don't realise pj is that it's aonly a short bus ride too Seoul station and closer to central Seoul than some of those living in Seoul... lol
Anyway, I just finished a job 3 weeks ago or so and was innundated with interviews and offers same as I alwayys have been since 6 years ago, so I haven't noticed a lack of jobs out there. I had a new job within two weeks
Though to give the OP credit - there most likely are MORE APPLICANTS than there used to be. Anyone who's been here since I came here (2003) or earlier visiting Hongdae or Itaewon these days will tell you there are 5 times as many foriegn ESL teachers these days. It's become a more popular thing to do upon graduation....
Check out the international jobs board though - Taiwan and Japan have dried up considerably... I counted only 3 ads for jobs in Japan and that was going back 4 pages and they were from the same companies... Used to be tons of Job opportunities for Japan...
Still loadsa jobs here though and most people I know earning around 2.4, so the future doesn't seem bleak to me |

Average at best.... I'll bet it's six classes a day. I'd rather beat my meat, dressed as little red riding hood during mass in a Southern Baptist church in West Texas.
