So my co-teacher took the following to the launderette for me (I'm out on a farm myself, so couldn't do it.) This is a simple, no frills adjuma / adjoishi Korean joint with a washing machine and a dryer. We are in Geumsan, very countryside and I used to pay LESS for MORE laundry in SEOUL.

2 pairs jeans
1 pair slacks
3 cotton sweatshirts
4 pairs boxers
4 pairs socks

They were laundered and ironed NOT DRY CLEANED

Guy charged 25,000 WON.

I was like WTF???? you paid that without questioning him. I'd pay less than that in GANGNAM!

He could fit 5 times that in his washer and dryer, so he's making over 100,000 on every load of washing he does...?

[Mod Edit] that. I'm paying my coteacher as it's not her problem, but Im going back there today to get at least man won refund

What do you think????

Do you have nothing else better to do?

Just learn your lesson and don't go back again. Is it really worth your time to go fight for 5 or 10 won? Goodness.

Dude. 25,000 won for laundry - are you kidding?

Why can't you do your own laundry? Your school should provide you with a washing machine. If they haven't, buy a bucket and wash them yourself. If you show up to school in un-ironed clothes, the school will probably provide you with an iron.

So, yeah maybe that is a little expensive. So, maybe take it yourself
next time. So, that is all I have to say about that. Rolling Eyes

Sounds expensive as that's about what it would have cost to dry clean your load (in Seoul).

I make it a point to always know the price before I commit to any service or product. Perhaps years of travelling in dodgy countries has caused me to think this way.

And next time, get the price in writing.

Yeah, I am surprised your co-teacher accepted that. Last month while I was living out of a hotel before my apartment became available, I had a larger load than yours done for 5000 won - and done in 2 hours to boot. I also just had an over sized bedspread done for 5000won at a different place. So I'm thinking that's the typical charge for one load.

Dare I say you were taken to the cleaners?

Yeah I thought it was too much.

Morning Star. Nothing better to do than not get ripped off for more than double a reasonable price. Shocking! What a crazy mf I must be! I think I'll go out now and pay 15,000 for a gimbap. Why not! lol...

Oldfatfarang. As mentioned I'm in the countryside. I live in a small room on the schoolgrounds with no laundy facillities until I move into my new apt in town. All there is apart from that are farms. the nearest town is 12km away and the busses are very random. I've been here 5 days.... Cut a guy some slack lol, you ppl....

Cohiba. oh, yeah you're a troll, forgot. No reply neccessary.

Ying. Nah, they just washed, dried and ironed it.

Sector7g and clockout. Two reasonable people out of a thread. Not bad these days! Ying's my friend, so obviously him too.

Then waaaaaaaaaay too much. That would bug me. She didn't give you a receipt? Tell her you're going to the cleaners to ask why you were charged too much and then visit the cleaners. That's what I'd do. No way I'd let them get away with that.

Just tell them in Korean that there must be some kind of mistake because they only washed and dried a small load. I wouldn't have any qualms about asking your co-worker to translate for you/get a receipt. That's what your everyday Korean would do, so why not you? 25 bucks to wash and dry a small load is ridiculous.

Apparently other people on this thread are rich. Rolling Eyes Even a rich person wouldn't accept this.

You have to be selective about where you go and what you wash.

My wife dry-cleans some items that cost around 7,000 won or more apiece, and I just cringe. Has to be done, though. She brings home the bacon, so I don't get to say much about it.

I took a pile of button-down shirts to be dry-cleaned yesterday. There is a large shop down the street that does it for 900 won per shirt. Many places these days charge 1,500 to 2,000 per shirt! THAT is insanity. I don't take these shirts in every time, but once and a while seems to keep the shirt in better condition overall.

Again - my few items WERE NOT dry cleaned.

Same info applies... washed, dry-cleaned, it's all the same here. I find a lot of the shops do a pretty poor job, too. There was a shop down the street from our old house that kept clothes hanging on hangers out in the sun... sometimes blowing off onto the ground. Pick 'em up.. dust 'em off.. OK! With a lot of items, that's fine. But there are items you'd rather not have baking in sunlight because it fades them.

Even if you go to a dry cleaner and have them cleaned (not pressed), it shouldn't cost more than 9,000won.
This is just one reason why it is important to learn the language.
