Hello,

I took a job recently in China that went belly up. Previusly I worked for 3 years in Korea. But now I am told that a criminal record check is necessary for a working visa in Korea, and being abroad that is next to impossible to get. Is this true?

No criminal background check= no job now in Korea. Period. State CBC are more difficult to get from abroad, but you can get a FBI CBC and it is not as difficult to get (If you are American). Either way you have to get this done to get your Immigration paper work together to secure your E-2 visa. Because you have worked in Korea before you do not have to do an interview in your home country.

Ask others in the forum if you are from another country as they might have the info you need to secure the needed CBC.

I am from Canada and it will take 4-6 months if abroad.

I don't think you need a criminal records check to get an E1 visa for working at a university, do ya?

Can anybody verify if that's still true or not?

yep, the korean gov needs verification onl;y if you are teaching or working with children.

it is not needed at a uni job, but might be because most uni jobs you will end up teaching at a childrens camp in the summer or winter.

for those who are abroad and need an a criminal record there is a service that can FEDEX and get your records both notorized and apostiled for you only with concent from one of your family members.

You might need a family member to get your record faxed to them from their local or federal court?

I had two sent to me in the past three months, one for a C-4, and just recently a new one for a new E-2.

I am lucky to have one family member who can help me, without one it will be difficult.

It cost around 250.00 US BIG bucks.

If you are in the States...

you can get one less than 12.00 dollars; including the notary and apostle... Call your local police and they can fax you your record or you can pick it up for free, then take it to a notory office then again to a City Hall Office to get the apostle stamp. That process took me only a half a day but it was worth every step, bus, and train. LOL
