Hey all,

So obviously I'm throwing events for this bar Ka-Brew. We really want to have Rugby an Soccer on Sundays but I'm American so I know nothing about either.

What's the best way to watch them online? What are the most watched leagues? Is there any official HD subscription offered by the league?

You can watch, but playing is the best way. Just remember these important things:
In Rugby there are no blocks, you can not be infront of the guy with the ball if he is on your team.

No forward passes, only lateral.

If you are taclking, you have to attempt to make a wrap; you can't simply knock a guy down.

Those three laws can help you go a long way.

Rugby is a sport invented by posh English schoolboys. The biggest innovation in the game was the introduction of the ball.
Before that, it was just all-out buggery.

In rugby when you are tackled and go to ground, you must release the ball. The two teams then have a small wrestling match to either gain or retain the ball; both sides trying to push the other off the ball.

When you are on the ground, you are out of the play. You must regain your feet to take part in play again.

No tackling above the shoulders and no lifting beyond the horizontal in the tackle. Also no tackling of any player while he is in the air (such as a player jumping to catch a ball).

You'd be best advised, IMHO, to try rugby 7's as the games are only seven minutes per half and seven players on each side rather than the usual 15. Basically the same rules apply but you need to be very fit...

There are 2 popular international rugby tournaments which take place every year. One is the tri-nations between South Africa, New Zealand and Australia (I think this is going on at the moment). The other is the 6 Nations (England, Wales, Ireland, Scotland, France and Italy) which runs between the end of January to March. There's also the Heineken Cup - a European cup competition between the top club teams. I'm always looking for somewhere to go and watch the 6 Nations matches.

Surely you can do better than rugby. This game is just a bunch of red-necks wallowing in mud - doing all sorts of homo-erotic things to each other. Thuggery and buggery. It's basically a religion where I come from. Kinda sad, really.

For starters, rugby is the sport of kings, a real team sport. And, would some one please let the SAffers in on the whole "Thung's game played by gentlemen," please?

Secondly, don't worry about any other rugby leagues or teams. Just follow the All Blacks and Super Rugby. I like watching the Guinness Premiership (go Munster!), but Super Rugby is, in my humble opinion, the best club rugby.

Anyhow, you need to go to http://tvnz.co.nz. I think that's were you can order a subscription to getting the live feed. I think you can also listen in on Sport Talk Radio's website. If those don't work, go to www.thesilverfern.com and post this question. You won't have any trouble at all getting info from those blokes!

On the downside, you are going to be hard pressed to get any games at all now that the season is finished. The above advice is for next year, starting around late February/ Marchish. You could probably download the AB games from a torrent. I'm not sure abou Super games.

As far as showing games some bars have the South African Sports Channel Supersports via a satelite dish and a decoder, probably they will have rugby, cricket and soccer due to the Soccer World Cup next year. Ken does this at Pub Scrooge, he might tell you how to get the subscription if KA-Brew isn't in Itaewon or try google.

Australia network available via cable or satelite dish carries Rugby but maybe only if Australia are playing, i'm not sure.

Finally I watch rugby online at http://www.rugbyzone.com/ as someone mentioned earlier, there is a few games in October/November but then nothing until February/March.

Watching rugby or soccer online is generally a bad idea. The quality is normally rubbish.

Major competitions for rugby union that would be worth showing would include:

The Guinness Premiership (major clubs that may be worth showing include the Leicester Tigers, Gloucester Rugby, London Wasps, London Irish, Harlequins, Bath and Saracens)
The Magners League (a league consisting of the major teams from Scotland, Ireland and Wales. Most of the clubs in this league are part of the major teams in Europe so any game would be worth showing)
The French Top 14 (I doubt many would really want to see this unless they were major rugby nuts)
The Heineken Cup (one of the two European cups)
European Challenge Cup
Tri-Nations (A tournament involving South Africa, New Zealand and Australia. Soon to include Argentina as well)
Six Nations (A tournament involving Scotland, England, Ireland, Wales, France and Italy)

I don't really know much about club rugby in Australia or New Zealand. I know even less about rugby league - try Wikipedia for information on both these things.

For soccer, I would recommend showing matches from:
The English Premier League (teams that may be worth showing are Manchester United, Chelsea, Arsenal, Liverpool, Aston Villa, Everton and Manchester City)
Serie A (the 'premier' league in Italy. Top teams include Inter Milan, A.C. Milan, Juventus, Roma, Fiorentina)
La Liga (the Spanish top division. Top teams: Barcelona, Real Madrid, Sevilla, Villereal)
Other games from Europe that may be worth showing include: Rangers v. Celtic and a few from the French and Portuguese leagues (possibly even the Irish and Welsh leagues as well if you can find them)
The European competitions are mid-week so wouldn't be ideal for showing, really.

Re: HD question. No league does (as far as I'm aware). The major European soccer teams offer streaming of their games from their websites but you have to pay a subscription fee (if you're showing several different teams, this could be expensive). I would recommend if you're going down the online route to use www.free-football.tv It's a subscription site which costs less than �10 for the entire season (last season anyway), but it shows games from everywhere (international games, Eastern European leagues, league games from South America and the MLS included). At least that site did last year (and I doubt anything has changed). The quality is generally pretty decent. As for rugby, I don't know any sites I'm afraid.

Edit: I, once upon a time, worked as a manager of a sports bar across in the UK and would decide what games to show/advertise. If you want advice on what games to show, just PM me.

Scrooges shows them in Itaewon often.A good strategy is to pretend like you want to know how to watch games at home and go there and ask a few questions.

They're not terribly nice people there, though.
