But is it tested?

Isn't this just Microsoft OneCare re-branded?

OneCare bombed many tests..

We'll have to see how it does in tests in a few months, but free is always good.

Although MSE might not boast as many features as OneCare did, it is a lot better at what it does do. It's free, and it requires no registration, trial versions, or license renewals. It really does automatically stay up-to-date. Most core functions can be activated with a single click. It is also very lightweight.

Based on what we've seen so far, we have to recommend that you at least give the product a download. Everyone currently using free antimalware software should give it a shot, and those with paid solutions should think about taking MSE for a spin before renewing subscriptions.

The initial reviews from many many sites give it 2 thumbs up.

Installed it last night.

So far so good.

I also turned UAC back on for extra security. I'm not sure why though. I've been using Vista Ultimate x64 for two years now without even a virus alert.

This will be very nice for those old and computer inept folks who only use a computer for e-mail and surfing.

Having to renew a free anti-virus program, or face scare-tactics by free AV companies about updating the product to the paid version can be daunting for them.

What AVG, Avast, ESET, and others think of this:

They basically say it won't work well. We'll see.

Personally, I'd find it hard to believe that a company with the experience and resources MS has would put out a product which could see millions of users getting viruses etc........putting out an anti-virus carries a lot of responsibility.
People put their trust in these programs to safeguard their machines. The backlash against MS would be enormous.
