Coming Out in Middle School
http://www.nytimes.com/2009/09/27/magazine/27out-t.html?pagewanted=all
Austin doesnt have to play the pretend game, as he calls it, anymore. At his middle school, he has come out to his close friends, who have been supportive. A few of his female friends responded that they were bisexual. Half the girls I know are bisexual, he said. He hadnt planned on coming out to his mom yet, but she found out a week before the dance. I told my cousin, my cousin told this other girl, she told her mother, her mother told my mom and then my mom told me, Austin explained. The only person who really has a problem with it is my older sister, who keeps saying: Its just a phase! Its just a phase! |

This was a fantastic read. I hope the "pretend game" soon becomes a thing of the past. |

That will still take some time in Korea. |

No one is the least bit concerned that these are MIDDLE SCHOOL STUDENTS?!?!?! They are not old enough to watch R movies, yet its perfectly alright for them to engage in sexual relations?
The issue here isn't about being gay. The main issue here should be "YOU ARE TOO YOUNG TO BE ENGAGING IN SEX". |

But not too young to feel attraction. Sexual preference isn't just about boinking. |

Unbelievable.
Next thing you know, a 5th grader in elementary school will come out, and no one will bat an eye.

True, but they are far from mutually exclusive. These kids are fairly young. Do they really understand what is going on? |

I was pretty much 100% sure which sex I was attracted to by the time I was in grade 8. I remember grade 7 being the time my classmates started "dating" and having "bf's/gf's". |

Yeah, agreed. I was attracted to girls from when I was around 8 or 9 yrs old and some of my bolder friends were kissing girls and having pretend weddings in the playground too at that age.
What surprises me is that his girl friends saying they were bi.... I'm surprised 8 year olds even know what that is! |

I absolutely agree. At that age, I'm sure most humans have these feelings. But do we fully understand them to the point of stating a preference? Do we fully understand what these feelings mean at such a young age? I just don't think so. |

From the story -
Quote: |
It seems like I spent the entire year in the principals office trying to get them to protect my son. But they would say things like, Well, what did he do to provoke them? We live in a very conservative area with very vocal parents, and I believe the school didnt want to be seen as going out of their way at all to protect a gay student. |
Dinosaurs if that's true.
I don't neccesarilly find the foollowing disturbing, but I do find it bizarre. Kids are just growing up so damned fast these days...
Quote: |
People are totally paranoid. She suggested that they come up with some code words on the down low so we can tell you whats up without anyone knowing what were saying! (They settled on paw for gay and woof for bisexual.)
As we walked past the gym, a group of boys came rushing out. Justin pointed to a short, muscular eighth grader in a baseball cap. Paw! he said.
Alison looked surprised. Isnt he a woof?
No, he just thinks hes a woof, Justin said.
Amelia looked confused. What does woof mean again?
A minute later, they fixed their gaze on a boy sitting against a wall listening to his iPod. Paw, Alison told me. I mean woof!
Yeah, hell make out with anyone, Justin confirmed. Totally bisexual.
No, hes not! Amelia said, apparently distraught by the news.
Oh, stop getting all mad just cause you like him, Alison told her. Everyone knows hes a woof.
After pointing out a handful of girls who are definitely woofs, Alison turned to me and recalled a recent lesbian moment of hers. I totally had the hots for this girl in Jesus Christ Superstar, she said with a giggle. I was, like, Whoa, Im really attracted to you right now!
Jesus was hot in that, too, Justin offered. |

That's a misnomer. Yes, they are exposed to sex, violence etc. at a much younger age, but I do not believe they have enough background information and experience to be "grown up".
The major problem I see with this is kids ruining their lives before they have a chance to make informed choices. I realize teen pregnancies are nothing new, but at 12-13 years old. STD's and AIDS at that age? Bananas!!!! |

Thanks from all the straight guys in their 20s for the weekend plan - feign homosexuality to all hot women in listening radius and clue in on the bi-sexual hotties. Could be interesting. Excellent post. |
