Hi

My friend and I planning to go to Thailand and Cambodia starting the 2nd week of Feb, for probably for about 2 weeks. I'm trying to figure out how much it will cost. I've done some research but still don't have a clear idea, I was hoping I could find a little more information here.

We don't intend to spend too much time in Bangkok, but we would like to check out some of the markets. And to be honest we are a little interested in seeing the ping pong ball show. We want to see some temples (any recommendations) and go to some beaches/ maybe islands (again, any recommendations). I would prefer the beaches/ islands not be over run by tourists.

Cambodia- We want to see Angor Wat but would also like some tips on other places go/ things to do. A lot of people I know go to Angor Wat and that's it. Also is it easier/ cheaper to fly to Cambodia for Thailand or do the border crossing.

I know these are a lot of questions but any information, especially regarding costs would be really helpful.

Thanks

You could get by on 30 USD a day in both places. Cambodia will be a little cheaper for many things. Angkor Wat will skew your budget a bit with a 20 USD or so for 1 day and 40 for a 3 day pass. Renting a driver could run you 20-50 + bucks or so, or you could rent a bike for a few bucks and cycle around yourself, though it'll be hot during the middle of the day. A moto or tuk tuk is around 10.

You could also check out Sikhanouville (sp?) which is a beach town about two hours from Phnom Pehn. There's also some complexes in the N. East, closer to Laos...can't think of their name off the top of my head. It'll be a bit rough getting there, but because of that there won't be that many people.

Flying to Siem Reap will be quite pricey, I think 200 bucks + or so RT. You could fly RT to Phnom Penh for around 70 USD on AirAsia if you book pretty soon. Then 5-7 hour bus ride to Siem Reap. Or just bus it from BKK to Siem Reap. My friend did it three days ago. Took her about 9 hours but she said it wasn't too terrible.

For accommodation, you can spend anywhere for 4-5 USD on up depending on what you want. Food can be quite cheap as well, with a meal or two setting you back less than 4 bucks at some places, and street food less than that.

For two weeks I'd plan about 500-700 USD to be quite comfortable, around 500 if you're getting cheaper digs and eats, and you could do it for less if you wanted to, but since it's your vacation and all... Not including flight tickets.

If you can utilize some of the Korean sites like onlinetour.co.kr and others, I've seen quite a few RT trips ICN-BKK for under and around 400k won.

Oh, good temple complex two hours north of Bangkok called Ayutthaya. UNESCO place. Might be interested in that. You can take a train or bus in about two hours

Bangkok Air has a monopoly on the flight from Bangkok to Siem Reap and set their prices accordingly, but I think that's supposed to expire by the end of the year. If it does, under no circumstances would I take the overland trip unless I wanted to do penance for something, even though they fixed the Cambodian leg of the road.

When you go to Angkor Wat, be sure to visit the other temples, some of them are much more interesting. I also recommend visiting one of the stilted villages on the Tonle Sap, and the hike to the River of 1000 Lingas is pleasant. Since you have so little time (frankly I would go to Thailand *or* Cambodia with two weeks, but not both) you might consider hiring a guide; The Villa in Siem Reap organizes responsible, low-cost small group tours of the temples and outlying areas.

Thanks for the advice. Actually it's my friend who only has 2 weeks, I have a little over 3 weeks. I was hoping to get as much in as possible with/ for her but I'm beginning to think it would be better to do Thailand or Cambodia.
Do you think it's possible for me to do the one we don't choose with my remaining week and 1/2?

Sure you could have a reasonable visit in either one with 10-11 days. I think what I'd do is spend a week or ten days in Thailand with your friend, since I think it's more fun with two, and then the two of you can go to Siem Reap and visit the temples. After your friend leaves you could move on to Phnomh Penh or Sihanoukville.
