She just better hope that nobody who has an axe to grind with the school calls immigration. Or if they just want the reward.

How does your friend know that Immigration has her passport? Immi doesn't require anything more than a photocopy/scan of the ID page of the passport to issue a 'Certificate of Recognition of Visa Issuance' (what she will need in order to apply for an E-2).

I hope your friend didn't give her passport to the company! Rolling Eyes

Many jobs take the passport and go to immigration with it, or used to, so there is often no problem with doing so. BUT...time for your friend to get the passport back. Two weeks is ridiculous. Been here 9 years and never had to wait more than 1 week...and I spent 6 years on E2's.
If your friend got here from home without a work visa, she's illegal as soon as she starts working. While your friend can renew an existing visa, or get it transfered from one job to another, she CANNOT get a new E2 visa from within Korea.

did the person give her passport to immigration in person? Or did she just give it to her school official that promised to give it to immigration. Those are 2 very different things. It should take 1 week at the most...2 weeks is sounding suspicious as hell. I'd call immigration right now and check up on this.

Working on tourist visa = illegal. You my as well teach privates, it's just as illegal.
