Finishing up my first year contract and I'm gonna move to Seoul. What is a great area to live and work in, from those who know Seoul's angles?

My city has a grand population of 300thou and I'm well keen on a change of scenery. Where should I set my target? Wink

Why do people always post this kind of shite without saying what they want in a city e.g. nightlife, shopping, other foreigners, museums, parks, etc... Hey, last I checked Kreskin doesn't post here.

Thanks buffoon. Fantastic reply. Splendid job at trashing this thread.
All of the examples mentioned are what any average person would want in a city of a zillion people and varieties.

Go bad mouth the ajeosi's outside if you're drunk, don't post antagonising garble here.

Question still stands. Which areas of Seoul are the best to live and work in. If thats your area, could ya share why Wink

Well, I like the Itaewon area, since it's central in location. Some people hate Itaewon though; too Western for them.

Another nice area is Hannam-Dong (around Oksu stop), because it's also central, and just over the bridge from Kangnam. Kangnam, for that matter, is nice but expensive -- sometimes people teach for schools in this area, but live elsewhere. Most Koreans seek to live in Kangnam or Apkujeong, which is the richest area around.

Many foreigners like Shinchon (or around Hongik University on the Green Line -- better known as "Hongdae"), because the nightlife in that area is really good.

Dehangno (near Hyewha stop on light-blue line) is located Central and bit north near some Universities, and is a nice area with some nightlife.

Another neat area is Myeong-Dong for shopping and some nightlife.

Gangnam. Good and busy with koreans.
Itaewon. Busy with foreigners.
Seolleung. Good and convienient.
Gangnam or Seocho would be my suggestion.

I think Songpa is clean (for Korea) and it is close to a lot of my friends...I guess I am a bit biased. It may not be the best, but you can do worse.

I agree with posts about Gangnam. Nice but too darn expensive.

Itaewon is a hole but if you pay for your own place, its good, as it is very cheap.

Hongdae does have a nice nightlife, but I think you will get tired of it pretty quickly.

I would seriously like to ask you what do you look for in choosing a neighborhood. The second poster in all honesty is probably not trying to flame you, but to draw out what you need or want. People are different and one person may love one place, but it can be someone else's worst nightmare.

e.g. When I first moved to Seoul I lived in the Shincheon (Yonsei) area. It was very interesting for me 6 years ago (coming from a small city in central Korea). Yet, now I probably would choose not to live there due to what I want. Everyone has a different sort of temperament.

Myself *personally* am in NE Seoul (Nowon-gu) a convenient 5 min. walk to the subway (Line 6) and the fact that I'm 25 min. away from both Itaewon and Konkuk U. (Where I tend to go out), am very happy. When I do take the pilgrimage to Hongdae or Kangnam, it is much further and may tend to be a bit more of a pricey eve.

I think the real challenge is where can you build community for yourself. It might depend on your age and temperament and what kind of experience you want.

If I were coming to Seoul again for the first time, I would choose Itaewon. The military will be bugging out soon~ heading for Seongtan, and there is a lot happening there. Hong dae is also nice~ though maybe not so quiet. Gangnam is awesome~ a bit pricey. Some people that I know love the Olympic Park area.

All the best in making your choice.
Cheers!

I think the best area of Seoul is a matter of your personal taste and budget. Of course I like Kangnam best!

What is so great about Kangnam? I'm not saying it isn't great.. don't know that I've ever been there.. all Seoul (and Korea) tend to look the same to me.. Just interested in why people love it so much..

It's a good place because it is really busy and there is an absolute wealth of restaurants, bars and shops. It is a young crowd generally and the best thing is that there are very few foreigners around, or at least, very view visible foreigners.

Oh yes. And of course, there is......................................

kangnamdragon.

If you live in Gangnam, how is that the view from your apartment. That picture, I reckon, is taken from the south west of the tower, and Gangnam is due south of the tower and certainly isn't that close to the tower.

Answers on a postcard please.
