My friend recently quit her job at a hagwan in Seoul. It was a amicable parting. She gave notice and got whatever she was owed. In the settlement she recieved 400, 000won as vaction pay, for vacation she didn't take. I believe she was 7 or 8 months into the contract.

Anyway, we were surprised that the school gave her the vacation pay. She hadn't even thought of asking for it. We figure the school wouldn't have given it to her if she wasn't legally entitled to it.

When you quit a job are you entitled to unpaid leave, if you haven't used any vacation time?

If the amount of vacation time was decided and the person just never got the chance to use it, then of course it should be included. If they are to get 1 week in winter and one week in summer and they never were alllowed to use the week, then of course they should be paid for it.

Your friend got a good deal. Care to share the name of the school, since it sounds like a positive situation?

The teacher is not entitled to the vacation pay if he or she does not finish the contract.

Well done. Most will not pay anymore than is required if you decide to leave early. Did she work through a holiday period? That could be the determining factor Smile

As far as I know, there was no scheduled vacation and she didn't work during any holidays.
The school management seemed to be very reasonable people. Another thing that shocked me was this: The teachers' salary is based on 20 days per month. In months that had more than 20 working days, they got holidays. I've never heard of that before!
