My husband and I went to glasses for the first time in our lives today. My husband's noticed he's been getting pretty near-sighted, and I thought I would get checked too, as while I haven't noticed actually not being able to see words, I do notice I've been squinting a lot at my books and getting eye-strain. So my husband got glasses and I got reading glasses, as I figure I'll need them more and more as I get older while doing this PhD! We both picked out frames for 19,000 won and lenses that are supposed to be good for being in front of the computer a lot for 50,000.
Since these are my first glasses I may be needlessly worried, but I feel that while the words in my books seem brighter and clearer my eyes haven't yet adjusted and I'm getting slight headaches (plus things just feel weird as I haven't worn glasses before). Am I correct that I should limit my use to just when I need reading glasses? I'm kind of surprised that we weren't told our vision (20/20, etc.)- is there a proximity to 20/20 that shouldn't require glasses? If one uses reading glasses when one doesn't REALLY need them is this bad for one's eyesight (is it better to go without in this case)?
Since the glasses place is right near our apartment maybe I'll go back tomorrow and see how close I am to 20/20, because I am curious...
Thanks for your help with a new (for me) world of eyewear... |

it takes adjustment. I never noticed anything being brighter, but i did get dizzy. It took me awhile and I only used glasses when using the computer, in class, or reading at first. |

I got my first pair of glasses when I was 13 and I can still remember how the floor tilted! And yeah, you might get a slight headache at first, since your eyes and brain have to get used to seeing more clearly. If they keep up for more than a week, you might want to go back to the eye place and see if you need an adjustment. |

Yeah. No pair of glasses will give you the same optics as another pair or as the unaided eye, so it always take adjustment to a new pair even if your prescription does not change. |

It is normal to get dizzy and get headaches. I still wonder if getting glasses was a good decision. I used to get massive headaches all the time from reading. Getting glasses stopped that. However, I feel like my eyesight has gotten worse due to having glasses. |

To say that i'm "near sighted" is an understatement since i can't see anything near or far. I was confused when the optomitrist asked me if i wanted to "see near or see far", and that i had to choose one. In the states i just got the glasses and could see both near and far. It was just assumed that you wanted to see both...anyways so now my glasses i can see sharp in the distance but near things are blurry and out of focus. WTF. So i have to go back and get a new pair of lenses that are for both near and far... |

glasses also distort images because of the way the lens curves. Your brain is trying to adjust to that. Also, things appear smaller with glasses (for nearsighted people at least).
Wear your glasses for a couple hours and then gradualy increase the usage. |
