US legal system is a huge mess. Is it any wonder that there are more lawyers in the US, than the REST OF THE WORLD COMBINED.
Hell, most people can't even sue a company because they can't afford the costs of a lawyer. In order to get anything done, you need class action status, and that's very hard to do.
To do anything in the US, you need a lawyer to cover your butt. Someone can slip and fall on a grape that as the floor, and 8 months later you are bankrupt because that person sued you and took you for everything you have. |

| No way in hell korea should emulate US legal system. No countries should copy US's retarded, cluster f*ck legal system. |

I am from the US and I don't think I have ever agreed with shinramyun before. However, I have to agree on this point. One thing I don't miss about the US is the messed up legal system (at least in terms of civil disputes).
I'm not saying that the rest of the world is any better, though, because I don't have any experience anywhere else. |

No, it's just no secret that suing people in America is practically a national pastime, and people sue for absolutely ridiculous amounts. For example, the old woman who spilled coffee on herself and got millions, or any other hilarious amount people get for doing stupid shit. In America the family of the deceased would get millions and the officers would be fired, all thanks to someone else being a moron. |
That old woman was a 79 year old grandma who got 2nd and 3rd degree burns over her crotch due to coffee hotter than any person could drink. McDonalds refused her offer of a $20,000 settlement and she ended up with something like $500,000. |
i don't recall her being that old...i do however remember that she only received severe burns bcuz seh was holding the coffee between her legs whle driving and when it did actually spill, instead of quickly getting the scalding hot coffee off her body she decided to let it sit there for a few minutes thus horribly burning her. |

There is so much misinformation about that case that I swear people should be forced to actually read about it before they are ever allowed to comment on it. Your version of the story doesn't even make any sense. You'd have to be brain dead to allow yourself to get burned for a few seconds, let alone a few minutes, without trying to do something about it.

Liebeck was wearing cotton sweatpants; they absorbed the coffee and held it against her skin as she sat in the puddle of hot liquid for over 90 seconds, scalding her thighs, buttocks, and groin. No. First, most people who sue a company are actually other companies. Second, most individuals who sue a company for personal injury or other torts hire their lawyers on a contingency basis. That means the lawyer gets paid out of whatever money is won -- if the plaintiff gets no money, neither does the lawyer. The precentages are pretty high, sometimes that's justified and sometimes it's not.

Slip and fall cases typically pay out very little. Besides, this paragraph contradicts your first. |

Has anyone else notice that the email attached to the article appeared to be some kind of bad-taste joke? - I really hope it was just a coincidence..
the callousness with which some people are treating this case - ruled as police negligence don't forget - is quite frankly sad.
