With the G-Dragon Threads and the Koreans in Films thread going on I've dusted off the old K-Poop music videos on the Hard Disk- There are a couple of decent ones. Though not the best music wise, certainly they are interesting to watch. After an 8 year hiatus I started listening to Korean music beyond Rollercoaster and Clazziquai again. Probably cuz I'm finally here.

Turbo's Tonight- L.A. Violence. Breaking down racial barriers.

Shinhwa's Yo!- Good Guys play baseball. K-Schools are corrupt. Gang Brawls. English Subs.

G.O.D.'s- 어머님께 Blatant Rip Off of 2PAC. Still nice to see some the messed up corruption in the schools. A bit over the top. But the second scene had me asking a K-Friend "Is that really how things work over there?" "Yup" he said. "Man that's messed up."

H.O.T.'s We Are the Future- More Social Commentary. Hammer-esque outfits. English Subs.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C2IeVO6pfo4

H.O.T.'s Hope- For once a K-Vid that dosen't end in unmitigated disaster and death. Kinda cheesy, but nice and optimistic. English Subs.

KISS- Because I'm a Girl. The Classic Melodrama. Over-melodrama. But you're not a human being if you don't find it very sweet and sad.

Brown Eyes - With Coffee. Video and Audio quality sucks, but it has a young Shin Min Ah.

As for nowadays...
Baek Ji Young - 총 맞은 것처럼. Something about the whole breaking down and choking down ramyuhn thing.

Feel free to flame away or to post your own. Gaypop. K-poop. Over-dramatic. Suicidal. Plagiarized. Just plane lame. Whatever.

Dude, I remember watching Seo Taj Ji when he first got popular in the early 90s. I was in Korea that summer ('92 I think), when I remember watching a documentary on the group. They had just hit it big with their song "I Know." After rehearsals, the camera crew followed him home. On the way, a grandmotherly adjumma neighbor of his started harassing him. "I saw you on TV. So what is it that you know? What do you know punk? Huh? Because I know too." It was hilarious.

Then you saw the tiny room he lived in his parent's house. It didn't have any closet, so all his clothes were on a rolling rack. Most of it were the cheapie shirts you'd buy on the streets. No fancy costumes or stage outfits you see today. At the time, he would just wear his normal street clothes for performances. It was kinda sad to see as you'd expect stars to live larger than life. I'm sure that is different now though, but when he first started, he was just your average Korean guy.

Edit:

Found the video! Notice the bad lip-syncing and how all the girls in the front row sit so demurely throughout the performance. Laughing He finished last in the show. He was ahead of his time. Like when Public Enemy first appeared on the Soul Train - the audience booed them off because they never saw anything like them before and weren't ready for it.

Fast Forward 8-9 years and you get BoA doing this:

I miss US, old Roo'Ra and old DJ DOC. K-Pop 1995-2000 was the best. It hit a dry spell from 2002, but now it seems to be coming back a bit.

Does anyone remember a Korean music video with a futuristic (at least that's how I remember it) boxing match?
