I don't post much. But I check this site out regularly.

Online Chess: play daily
Online Scrabble: ditto

I want to learn chess after reading a cool book called 'Searching for Bobby Fischer.'

Could you reccomend or even post a link to an a good online chess site where I could learn and play?

I need to learn basic moves and strategies and then, well play people...

That would be really cool.

I drink coffee daily too. I don't even know why anymore, it's just an instant reaction, the first thing I reach for...

I started drinking it at uni to boost energy at work / study, but to be honest I feel more awake and energetic when I go a few days without it, so that's weird.

I'm going to drink more green tea as a substitute I think.

Reading,

It helps my mind get off stress and things that bother me.

I've read 7 books in the last week. But here's the thing. I don't read a book a day. I read 3-4 in 1 day. I don't read on the train either.

I go to a bookstore, sit down for 8 hours and just do a marathon of reading. I ALWAYS take huge breaks, smoking and going to the bathroom. But when I read, I read a page in 30 seconds or less.

I've achieved speed reading. Its good and bad. I burn through books like candy, so I pay so much in buying them.

honest question: how's your memory of read books?
snarky question: how's your comprehension of said books? Wink

Depends on the book.
Speed reading greatly increases comprehension for "light and predictable" material. Such as a novel or a relatively unchallenging book like a self help book.

However, for books that have complex jargon or too many intertwining ideas and premises it can lead to confusion.

However, almost 95% of the books we read are the former. so comprehension is much better. The reason speed reading helps with comprehension and memory of the books is because we are able to predict and read ahead of just normal verbal syntax. Visual imagery is much stronger and therefore understanding and recollection increases.

I highly recommend speed reading to anyone because it really opens worlds but it can be difficult to grasp a hold of. Especially because speed reading requires peripheral training and unlearning our old methods of reading.

I sped read in middle school and lost it sometime before college. When I was in college it took me 4 months to retrain it. It's a skill that takes a long time to pick up, but is also easy to lose.

I can speed read for really basic stuff. It's actually kind of fun because the story comes into your head kind of like a movie. I can read about 100 pages in a hour (which isn't really that fast). But I can only keep up that pace for about an hour anyway as it's way more tiring than normal reading.

For more complicated stuff like a text book, it's a good way to get an overview of a topic but it's pretty much nil for comprehension. I need to practice more though as I always slip into old habits like tracking back and reading each word separately.

By the looks of your spelling, it seems like you are in need of some book learning yourself.

Chocolate. I figure it's mostly harmless as the good feelings offset the dental decay lol....

And those mozerella cheese strings you can get at the 7-11 now... lord they're so moreish....

I used to be hooked on choco cream pies but had to kick that as I'd eat a whole box in one go...

A buck twenty-five for one stick of stringcheese! Unreal.

This thread has really revitalized my desire to learn to speed read. I love books, and download tons from Audible.com. I go through podcasts like crazy as well. Usually 10 in a week, and an audio book or two as well.

My addiction? Video games. Been sucking them in since 1985. I spend on average an hour a day playing xbox or World of Warcraft but during the winter it skyrockets.

I'm addicted to music, masturbation and master minding a plot to take over the world every night before bed.

In that order. I call it the M and Ms....I think I might have to hit myself in the face now....so bad.

I'm addicted to pool and poker. I play both more than any human should. I'd say I play pool about 30 hours per week and poker about 20-25. And yes, I play for money. I have a real problem...... but I don't care!

Supposed to be harmless addictions in this thread.

Watching American/British television

Downloading Media--currently, lots of electronica/electro-pop FLAC: Yelle, Passion Pit, Empire of the Sun, Steed Lord, Justice, Cut Copy, etc.

endoftheinter.net
digg.com
slickdeals.net

I guess this is all one huge addiction to the web. I can never seem to say, "Not today, internet."
