I've been teaching 3 privates a week for about 4 months. I've told them on several occations to keep it hush hush. Well on two separate occations they've called my school to tell me that they need to cancel a session that night. After telling the first person never to do that again, I get another call from another one 3 weeks later.

It was just the receptionist who took the calls and I don't think my director has any knowledge of this. If questioned about this though, I think telling lies about how these people are actually my "friends" will be completely transparent. How do hagwans usually burn you for this? Do they come right out and ask you? Or do they have someone follow you? How do I really know if I'm burnt? It's like gambling and I almost think I should quit while I'm ahead. But I am making an extra 400,000 to 450,000/month so the money is excellent.

What to do?

First, I would not give out my work phone number to those people. Tell them to call you on your cell phone. Second, is only 400,000 worth it?

First, I really thank you for your response.

Second, I never gave my work number out to them, one of them was my former student, so she new where I worked. I then hooked up my other privates through her.

Third, yes we are making a ton of money here in Korea. But that doesn't mean that 450,000 isn't a lot of money. At home, that would be rent for a month. I am making about 3.0 a month and I wouldn't be had I not added all of those "450,000s" up. Some from a private here, some from overtime there.

Anyhow, I really appreciate any response. I just hate the teachers here who act like money is nothing to them. How much do you normally make for privates a month anyway?

One more question...how do they actually catch you teaching a private? Is it the school themselves, or do they call immigration if they suspect you?

maybe the school will get jealous and report you. i've never actually heard of immigration knocking on the front door of an apartment where you are teaching the private. most people get caught when immigration are tipped off. some say the main people to tip off illegal workers are disgruntled ex-boy/girlfriends!!!

probably better in the future to avoid obtaining privates through your school. all it needs is u to fall out with the school and a quick fone call to immigration and, well, bye-bye korea.

usual going rate for a private at the moment is about 30,000won.

Helicopters, mustard gas and a lasso. They really hate people teaching private lessons. I'm totally serious.

My guess is that the school probably won't report you to immigration, because they need you, but if the boss finds out, he may use it as extortion to get you do other stuff. So if he does know, then he'll probably tell you he knows pretty soon. What advantage would he get from calling immigration behind your back, unless he wants to get rid of you?

If the school knows you teach privates, it could hold it against you and blackmail you. The director could fire you after 10 months for teaching privates and not give you your severence pay.

I get 100,000 per hour to teach privates, but I don't teach privates, but if I did, I'd get 100,000 per hour.

I don't understand anyone who feels that 400 000 is nothing, I would certainly feel that in my pocket at the end of the month. But, personally I would drop those privates now and get new ones. You should not be taking that kind of risk. Get privates who are not connected to your school and only give them your cell number.[/quote]

Go ahead and flame me all you want, send me hate e-mails, I don't care, but don't think for one minute that I am goody goody two shoes cause I am not; but I hope you get caught, fined and deported. This is not your country, you're a guest. You know the law and you know it's illegal to teach privates unless you have immigration approval. Just because everyone else seems to do it does not make it right. I know hundreds of teachers who would not even give a second thought to teaching privates due to the potential problems not to mention that it's illegal.
Gesh, this is NOT your country! Is it so difficult for you to follow a simple law!? But then you probably don't follow simple laws in your own country.
Yeah, I'm getting on your case. Don't like it, tough. Let the responses begin.

Then again, there is the reality that what you think isn't important. I'm sure he'll learn to live with your dissapointment.

I do think you're quite anal retentive about others not following your personal standards.... perhaps having a few less cups of coffee my cut down on your rhetoric..the person was asking for a simple opinion..that's all. Also, you seem to repeat yourself alot. Yes this isn't his country, you seem to keep stating the same idea again and again in a long paragraph which indicates simplistic thinking to me. Instead of perhaps berating the poor guy who makes more money than you, you could consider persuading him not to do privates. That would be much more effective than attacking him.

As for his question, if youre privates pose a risk...drop them. But, privates don't last forever so face the reality that when your private classes do dry up you will need a regular job.

There's a thread that's still around about the whole privates or not issue. Feel free to dig it up and stir things up again. I'll meet you there, but not here. You'll make good friends with Homer I'm sure.

Hell of a nice guy seems to have a very ironic name.

Anyways, if an ajumma was stupid enough to call my school like that, I would quit the lesson immediately. Even though by teaching them, you are both doing each other a favour, you can make it seem like you are actually doing them a favour.

This is exactly what I would do too. This wasn't the first time she's called your school and you told her not to do that. Dump this private and the one's you set up through her.

If you want to continue doing privates it's not really that difficult to get them. I've been approached by people on the street. I've turned them down because it's not worth being deported if I were to be caught. Set them up with people outside of your area and let them only have your handphone number.

If anyone breaks this protocol of contact then dump them quick. This is risky and serious as ratlash pointed out in an earlier post about the ex-bf/gf.

There is a thread on the morality of teaching privates and I can't think of a good reason that they are morally wrong either. Is it wrong to be able to learn a language? Are we dealing drugs?

Cheers and goodluck

Hellofaniceguy, after reading your post,I think you have a stick up your a**.If you don't choose to do privates,so be it.But lighten up and don't start preaching why others shouldn't.The OP asked reasonable questions.
