Something really needs to be done about the laws regarding sentences for sex offenders. This is getting ridiculous:

If you're that concerned with light sentences for child molesters, then write your representatives back home. Plenty of light sentences back home for you to be outraged and complain about. For example, Mark Hulett, was sentenced for 60 days for having sexual contact with a girl, beginning when she was 6, over a four-year period.

Complaining about Korean laws while being an immigrant guest worker is pointless and futile. Direct your energy to where it might do some good.
BTW, in the U.S., one in three girls and one in six children are sexually abused before the age of 18. The average serial child molester has between 360-380 victims in his lifetime. Only 2% of the Catholic clergy sexual abusers were ever jailed. The number of victims reported were 10,667 with an estimate of 4,392 abusers. These stats are from the Parents for Megan's Law website. |

No bias there. They can spout any stats they like, but there is no way that one in three girls is molested. NO WAY. |

Those stats can't be right
1 in 3 girls sexually abused by 18
1 in 6 boys sexually abused by 18
1 in 6 children sexually abused by 18. The math is wrong.
The legal age in the states is 18 right? That means every person which has has sex before 18 has been sexually abused?
Plus for Madoka how do you know he is on an E2? could be F2, F4, F5, D8, hell he could even be on a C4 (study). |

Exactly. And I think the laws that exist are adequate. 2 years is hard time! The guy's friends and family will completely cut him off, and in a country the size of a walnut he'll never have a chance to find any respectable work or references for a job. He'll end up cooking sweet potatoes from a rusty barrel in winter and walk around with a flak jacket and a five day stubble while drinking himself to death with panhandled money. |

Statistics are like rumors. They may be completely biased and botched, but they infect your memory like some nasty one in a million news article. These kinds of statistics sell news and people lap this kind of stuff up, creating this paranoid, panic-stricken society. It's almost fair to say that, according to who and when and how many people are involved, a good old fashioned statistic can function quite well as propaganda. Just think how much sympathy and outrage those statistics can cause because it's always a what if, what if. What if they're true! |

"The state recognizes that the court may not agree or subscribe to that method of sentencing but the state does," she said, according to the Burlington TV station. "The state thinks that it is a very important factor for the court to consider."
Cashman said he wants to make sure Hulett gets sex-offender treatment.
Under Department of Corrections classification, however, Hulett is considered a low-risk for re-offense, which means he doesn't qualify for in-prison treatment.
Cashman, therefore, issued a 60-day sentence and ordered Hulett to complete sex-offender treatment when he gets out or face a possible life sentence. "
This puts your article link more in perspective. And secondly, simply quoting statistics out of context doesn't really prove that much, for a variety of reasons. In particular, crime statistics are highly variable, due to different methods of data collection, apprehension rates, report rates, and even how crimes are defined.
edit added: It is a known and widely attributed fact that report rates in Asia are very low, and for very good reason. |

Did it say anywhere in my OP that Korea is the only country in the world to have problems with light sentencing? I've lived in Korea for five years and will soon be on an F2 so I think it's natural that I've developed an interest in national affairs. If a Korean lived in New Zealand for even one year and they felt that there was a problem with the severity of New Zealand's laws I'd be happy to hear them out and most likely would agree with them.
I know some of the criticisms of aspects of Korea on this board are exaggerated and I've agreed with you in the past when you've taken to task some of the people who make hateful generalizations. However you seem to be taking it to the point that no non-Korean has the right to say anything about Korean affairs at all. I thought you were more reasonable than that. |

Light sentences for child abusers deserve contempt no matter what the culture. Yes it happens elsewhere, but if there ever is an issue where you ignore comparisons and just go after perps.....
At least its getting media attention. Hopefully things will turn a corner soon.
The good thing is ALMOST ALL Korean people are sickened by this. The silent majority is composed of decent folk who know crap when they see it. |
