|
|
I'm just wondering. I scan this site most often at work, along with a host of other news sites from home. My Ko-teachers are pretty cool for the most part, but Dave's has a reputation among Koreans (deserved or not is not the point here).
They see the heading of this site as I frequently read and comment. Do you think that could be one of the silent factors that is held agains NET here? I'm not implying that this will stop me from reading the site during desk warming hours. But, I'm just wondering if this could be one of the mysterious factors that is suddenly held aganist people without telling them. What are your thoughts? |

Where did you hear that Dave's has a rep with Koreans? I'm curious. At my school, none of my coteachers are familiar with the website. If there is an unspoken disdain about what websites a teacher can view--apart from clearly adult ones--and which can help or hinder you when it comes to rehiring, then I'd see it as an additional reason to not re-sign. |

In two years I had so much desk warming, a lot of time on daves and never had even one comment. Facebook texas holdem got me in a lot of trouble and almost fired. They still don't believe I wasn't gambling for real cash at work. |

The thing is... this is K-land! Unless your principal is an evangelical Christian fundamentalist, viewing soft-core porn on a public school-issued computer will be looked apon favourably when it comes to a (male) FT renewing! |

Yeah, I know what you mean. I have gotten the impression from a number of sources. When I first arrived, there was a university hagwon administrator complaining to me about Dave's. I work at a public school, but he was the boss of acquaintances and would take them out for beers when they first arrived. Turns out, the uni hagwon ended up violating the contract and cheating them out of airfare, and the NETs did a runner.
I also know that this site is sometimes used as a target of ire for Korean netizens and hagwon owner associations. Again, I am not justifying anything, but merely wondering if others have come across negative reactions from other Koreans for using this site. |

You do have a point. Sadly, it seems it's my ability to look like a gentleman--the VP's words--and my willingness to imbibe at school dinners that makes or breaks it. But, I couldn't do the PS gig for another year. I'd go nuts! |

Yup... It's kinda like 'opposite-land'. Apparently, I too am a binge-drinking, chain-smoking, porn-surfing 'gentelman' who refuses all requests to teach extra classes, be sent to another school, or go on weekend 'workshops' with the rest of the faculty. I rarely eat at the cafeteria (when I do, they have a collective orgasm). However, I do climb a mountain with them one afternoon/year during exam days... because even though we'll go for some horrific K-food afterward, there will be massive quantities of soju & maek-jju. I wear suit & tie with polished shoes for my yearly demo class - this makes me a better teacher - and the principal, v.p. and students love me.
My future is assured. |

The Korean teachers guide for the books used at my old Middle School listed Dave's as a source of EFL materials. |

It's a non issue. My English co-teachers see "ESL" and think I am researching for lesson plans. I do an awful lot of research during school hours!! |

OK, good to know. But, just to put it out there, not all are clueless. Some have definite, albeit misguided, opinions about it, like some of the Korean teachers I've run across. |

Yeah, don't believe any Koreans I work with know about this site, Facebook, or anything else I kill time on. I'm sure it looks as indiscernable as the Korean sites look to my eye. |
