|
|
What is this level like? This is apparently my goal,
To be able to talk about future activities
To ask for and give information to others
For each student to speak at least 25 minutes including drilling
I have been given little information other than the students English level is around TOEIC 220. Little good that does me though. Is anyone familiar with that level of English and have any advice about sentence patterns and vocabulary that would be good for them?
Thanks |

A 220 TOEIC score for the combined Listening and Reading test is quite low (false beginner), if that is indeed what the score is referring to. I wouldn't expect much in terms of speaking or conversation ability - four to five word questions and answers. You will probably need to focus on lots of pattern drills and vocabulary building exercises, as most of them will have difficulty articulating basic subject - verb agreement even in the present tense.
Are you being provided a textbook or teaching materials? If not, I recommend a low level adult conversation book, like New Interchange 1 (snapshot here - http://www.cambridge.org/elt/ic3/links/IC3%20SB%20downloads/IC3_SB1_U7%20complete.pdf) or Tell Me More by Andrew Finch (http://www.finchpark.com/books/tmms/index.htm). The latter you can download and print for free or access it online. |

Would these patterns be too much? This is for a university class (if you can believe that).
Do you like _______?
Yes, I like ______.
No, I don't ______.
Can you _____?
Yes, I can ______.
No, I can't ______.
Do you want to _____?
Yes, I want to __________.
No, I don't want to _______. I want to _________.
My goal would be to get them talking about likes/dislikes (sports, activities, classes etc.) and talk about what they want to do (sports, activities, or what they want to study etc.).
I know it's probably too much for a class, but suppose to have them talking 25 minutes each. That's quite a lot if these kids have no vocabulary and sentence patterns at all. Unless that time counts for repetition drills as well? They really didn't tell me much. |
