My co-teacher keeps asking me to live in Korea despite telling him on numerous occasions that it would never happen. I've gave him a lot good reasons why I would not stay here despite all the 'positives'. But regardless he keeps asking me to stay in Korea and become a professor here.
Should I just agree with him? |

Your title line sounds like a death sentence. Just let him save face and agree. Boldfaced lies go a long way towards Borg, uh I mean, Korean jeong. |

He might just want you to marry his daughter. |

Strange - I have also been here almost 9 years and have been telling everyone that in 1.5 more years I am leaving - because I think 10 years is enough
and I want to go back to my homecountry to be near my family and to live near all my new nephews and neices of whom many I have never met.
My Korean friends and co-teachers have also been telling me the same thing "Oh, you should stay here forever" ... "Don't leave, you must stay here"...
I think the day when I pack my bags and leave Korea I will keep it secret - so nobody tries to stop me from leaving

I think any westerner staying longterm is affirmation that the Korean way of life is desirable. That's all.

He has 3 sons.
He just really really likes me. He think I'm like a Korean because of my work ethic and politeness.
I keep telling him I'm leaving right after my contract but he keeps pressuring me about it every day. I told him my reasoning why I cannot teach here forever. My reasoning is that I can't take care my of old parents on my PS salary. Nor would I want to bring them here to live at their age. I've told him this a few times but logic doesn't seem to work. I'm considering just agreeing with him from now on to shut him up. Then leave without announcing it. |

1) I can't take care my of old parents on my PS salary. Nor would I want to bring them here to live at their age.
2) I don't want to live in a country where most people can't speak English.
3) I'm not Korean, nor will I ever be perceived as one here. |
Those are all perfectly good reasons to go. I've been having a few of these conversations myself lately. Always initiated by the Koreans. I tried to use the "I'm not Korean, nor will I ever be fully accepted into Korean society" line. They agreed, but still said I should stay. "So I should live forever in a country that will never fully accept me as one of them, and thus be cast out of the culture even if I marry a Korean and learn the language perfectly?".. They just nod and smile.
It's a lose-lose situation. Just agree with them and say that you will. They will probably drop it after that. Then just leave when your time is up. They can't hold you at the airport just because you said you would stay. Let them feel like they've won the debate. It doesn't really matter. Once you're gone, it's not like you'll ever see them again. |

You're Korean because you're polite and have work ethic? Was there a "not" that was omitted or something there? Or, are you saying that both of those qualities are lacking? Or was there a typo and it should have said "He thinks I like Korea because of my work ethic and politeness." ???
Regardless, maybe the best way to avoid the problem you mentioned is to lie. While in Rome and all... |

Unfortunately, the restrictive government policies towards foreigners and the xenophobic attitudes of many koreans make any sort of long-term stay in Korea very unpleasant and difficult. |

Why would you even get into an argument about this? Just say yea, yea, yea then do whatever you want when the time comes. Koreans (and other cultures, of course) do this all the time. |

It's not just this, some other people pressure on certain issues and don't accept 'no' as an answer. When I say 'no' some people here just try asking again in the same way. Either that or they get upset. It almost seems like I am obligated to comply to everything.
Kteacher "will you teach my kids English?"
me "you mean for money?"
K teacher "no, but you can have lunchee at my place"
me: "sorry but no"
*1 week later*
Kteacher "You should come over to my place this weekend. Have dinner with us."
me "sure"
Kteacher "how about teaching my kids some English?"
me: >_>' |

No typo. He attributes good human qualities to Korean-ness. Negative qualities are what are carried by most foreigners. When I first met him he was shocked because I was unlike other rude/lazy foreigners.
"You....are like.....a Korean" --> best compliment according to him |

Tell him he should go live in, oh say, Russia, forever.
Nah, that wouldn't work. |
