IF FREE WIFI were also available, I would do it.
Otherwise, not good enough for me, but it's a start.
I wonder what they'll do about the applications costs? That was a major sticking-point. Apple didn't want to share profits. |

When you say free wifi, what/where do you mean? Everywhere? Because thats the 3G surfing, if you just mean regular old WIFI, you can get on any open WIFI network via iPhone for free, im not sure how common these are in Seoul, im sure a poster said it was free WIFI in the subway stations though? Places like mcdonalds, starbucks etc are now offering free WIFI aswell. |

No, just like Playstations and Xboxs there will be hardware and software differences. Things like the USIM, NFC, and frequency will be different.
I'm happy about these prices, i think the 65K is the one for me too. For the 95K i expected an unlimited package like the AT&T $99 package. I talked to a mobile developer and he said that he thinks we should be able to access the US app store, meaning for us English speakers we can get all the sweet apps on the US app store and not be stuck to the KTF app store. At first i found that hard to believe, than i remembered i'm in Korea and no Korean is going to access all those English apps anyways... |

From what i heard, KT bent over for Apple on this one. They figured that just having the iPhone will increase their overall share in the data market. They're not going to fuss much about the apps as long as it get's people buying the iPhone and signing up for the data plans which if you think about it, the more and better apps available, the better for them. |

| Wonder if there will be any restrictions for foreigners? It would suck if we had to put down a hefty "deposit" or pay an ungodly amount for the phone. |

KT said yesterday it plans to offer four pricing schemes for the iPhone and other smartphones in the middle of next month.
The four packages comprising voice, data and messaging services will cost 35,000 won ($29.5), 45,000 won, 65,000 won and 95,000 won, a company spokesperson said.
"We reported four new smartphone pricing plans to the Korea Communications Commission on Sept. 25, which we hope to start in mid-October," the spokesperson said.
The nation's No. 2 mobile carrier said last week that it obtained KCC's approval to sell Apple's iPhone plans, becoming the first Korean company to do so.
KT currently offers several fixed-rate data plans, but they do not have smartphone-only ones. He said the company plans to roll out more competitive data plans for smartphones and other handsets following its announcement on Friday that it will slash its mobile data rates.
Among the options, a 45,000-won bundle plan offers 500 megabytes of data, which are enough for users to not only surf the web but download music and other files. The package includes 200 voice minutes and 200 text messages. In the United States, a typical iPhone charge is about $70 ($40 voice + $30 unlimited data) without text messaging.
A 35,000-won tariff plan offers 100 megabytes of data, while a 65,000-won plan offers 1,000 megabytes of data, and a 95,000-won plan offers 3,000 megabytes of data.
KT cut its data rates by 60 percent to 20 won per megabyte, from the current 50 won under its 10,000-won plan that offers 200 megabytes of data.
In a bid to boost its data revenue, KT plans to roll out the iPhone as early as next month and other smartphones, while planning to launch its application store in November. KT said it has yet to decide the pricing of the iPhone, saying it is negotiating iPhone subsidies with Apple.
Meanwhile, Daum, Korea's No. 2 web portal, plans to give away the highest specification iPhone 3GS to all of its 1,000 employees as Chuseok gifts once the phone is launched in Korea. The internet firm also plans to support iPhone data plans for two years. The move came as Daum, which sells two applications for video-sharing and map services on Apple's App Store, looks to expand its iPhone-related business.

Actually I've changed my mind. The data plans aren't great, but actually the top tier is probably enough for my data usage. I'm assuming one would get a free nespot subscription like the one they have currently for the ipod (which is 3,300 won per month unlimited.) |

| I'm not familiar with smart phones and data plans so i have a question. If the ipod has wifi why not use that and go for the cheapest data plan. Wouldn't you be able to get by that way. |

The data plans are for use if there is no wifi coverage. In that case, you use the 3G network. However, I may be wrong as I'm only learning about all this stuff now. |

I mean free open wifi, like I use with my I-pod touch. If that ability is still available in the Korean I-phone, plus the data plan (giving us a choice when free open wifi is available), then I'd be interested. If they remove the option of using free open wifi in an effort to nickle/dime me to death, then it's not appealing to me. I'll stick with my touch and basic LG slim phone. |

That would be a joke if they did that, but even if they did im sure there'd be some way of hacking it. When i end up in Korea it'l either be iPhone or bog standard phone for me. The gps location and apps would come in very handy i think.
On your iPod touch can you access the GPS locating system when you're connected through WIFI? |

I seriously feel the ONLY way Korea would have allowed the I-phone is if all data transfer took place through a PAID system.
If the I-phone is allowed to access free open wifi signals, it would undermine everything for them. Far too many open wifi signals are available in Seoul, and they know it. Cripes, I'm content with my I-pod touch and all of the free wifi signals I pick up. No, I don't get them on the subway, but that's when I spend time reading the AP News or MSNBC News that I downloaded previously. Step out of a subway, and within a few hundred meters, you'll find something open and free -- BOOM, it grabs my e-mail and I'm good until 10 minutes later when it finds another free one down the street and grabs it again.
I've been keeping track, and approximately 40% of places I eat or have coffee at have a free wifi signal near enough that I can surf. In some areas, it's higher. That's pretty good, because if your goal is to surf, then you can just have a coffee wherever you know it's available.
I just don't see the I-phone happening without all data transfer being paid. I'll tell you this... if they were to allow it, then you'd soon see a massive gov't campaign to close open wifi signals, and scare people into securing their wifi router. Threats of big lawsuits from illegal downloads taking place through their signal would take care of that right quick. |

There are many situations where you don't have the luxury of accessing local wifi. How about when you are moving? What about in open areas?
Korean buildings are practically concrete bunkers. Right now in the building I live in, there is NO wifi signal. I'm in the middle of Dogok with million dollar apartments a stone's throw away.
The data plans are NOT pay per use. If they did charge you per megabyte, then it would make sense to turn off Wifi to make as much money as possible. You subscribe to the bandwidth. It doesn't matter if you buy the 1GB plan, it doesn't matter if you use 5MB or 500MB, you will still pay the same amount every month.
What KT will do, like every company that sells you a subscription type service, is convince people they need the top tier plan.
Let's say you don't use the Data plan, and stick to just Wifi. Unlike the iPod Touch, you are still paying KT to make calls, and use Text Messaging. That's still no different then someone who buys a Free with Contract phone that never uses the data features. |
