|
|
There was an article in the Korea Times the other day that said a lot of teachers are going unpunished for sex crimes and misconduct, often having to pay a fine or serve a suspension. Here's an excerpt:
| Quote: |
Teachers committing sexual crimes have been let off with just light punishments, Rep. Choi Young-hee of the Democratic Party said Thursday.
A total of 124 sexual crimes involving elementary and secondary school teachers were reported to the education authorities between 2006 and 2009. Among them, 47 involved prostitution, 43 were sexual harassment and five were rape cases.
However, only eight teachers (6 percent) were given prison sentences, while 31 were not indicted and 28 received suspended sentences.
``It seems that teachers were exempt from punishment through out-of-court settlements with the parents of the victims,'' Rep Choi said.
``Moreover, each city and provincial education offices, which were supposed to strictly punish those teachers, gave only verbal warnings. Only 21 teachers were fired for sexual violence.''
According to data collected by the lawmaker, nearly 60 percent of the assailants were merely warned or reprimanded. |
The journalist has a reputation as being among the worst in the country, and the lawmaker is one that routinely goes after native speaker English teachers, so take the article for what it's worth, but it was nonetheless interesting to know.

What about the hundreds of unreported sexual assaults on female Korean students by KOREAN teachers?
The students are afraid to come forward for fear of being labelled as a slut, a rat or someone who wants to ruin the teacher's reputation as well as her own for being alone with the teacher at the time of the attack.
Thats the one thing about Korea that makes it such a backward place; how far people would go or refuse to go to save face and protect their reputation as well as those around them.
It is starting to look as if being a foreigner now is like wearing a scarlet letter- thank god I'm out of that freakin' game. |

Korean teachers definitely abuse their position, but it would be a shame if teachers became the subject of a witch hunt like they are in North America. Back there, teachers cannot have ANY physical contact with a student and have to watch their backs at all times.
My daughter is elementary school age, and I'd rather gamble and let a teacher give her a hug if she falls and cries and needs that hug. The chance that some pervy teacher is going to abuse that is a chance I am willing to take. There are bad apples in every profession...we gamble every time we get in a car that we won't get into an accident, yet some people do. Life is a gamble. Why take away the good aspects because of a couple bad ones? I remember when I was a kid, teachers could hug their students.
I was giving a test to a female student in my room last week. I was thinking, if that was in Canada, there is no way I could have sat alone in the room with a female student. Here in Asia, atm they aren't as paranoid that something can go foul...and so I could do things like sit at my desk marking assignments while a female student sat alone in my classroom. |

Actually the bolded part seems right. Why should you go to prison for using a prostitute? Most causes of sexual harassment shouldn't involve jail.
Should you even be indicted for using a prostitute? |

I was teaching 4th grade back home and was told I wasn't allowed to hug the students when they hugged me, I was only allowed to pat them on the head. I am by no means a touchy-touchy guy, but most of these kids had no fathers around. My hug was probably the only affection they got from any male.
That being said, I was sure to do this in full view of other parents and teachers and would never be in a classroom alone with a student. |

I wasn't talking about the KT article, but the segment in the bottom blog;
| Quote: |
"E-2 visa holders, once caught for taking drugs or sexually harassing children, were often found to be rehired at another school or hagwon,'' said Yeo Jun-sung, an aide for Rep. Choi. ``The proposed bills are to remove these loopholes from the current immigration law.''
|
I think most foreigners have a strong personal ethic than to do this. Korean teachers are actually more likely to abuse their authority than a foreign teacher. At least the ones I've seen. |

The article IS ABOUT KOREAN TEACHERS. Also as a side note, if they are unreported...how do you know that there are hundreds of assaults?

Not too sure, but did those case involve underage prostitutes or students forced/ coerced into prostitution.

On day one you meet the teacher, you pull them over to the side and say, "I'm watching you." Point your fingers to your eyes and at them.
They'll get the hint. |

Really? I'm not saying all foreigners are perverts but I have met some extremely unsavory, creepy foreign men here. Would I want them teaching my 16 year old daughter? No way in hell. I'm not saying all Koreans are scotch free either, though, and can see how sexual abuse could easily happen and get covered up or go unnoticed here, but saying that most foreigners have a "strong personal ethnic" is absolute bull. |
