Here's a blog post I wrote last month when Google's Fast Flip came out.
Contains some comments about getting news when abroad and links to some necessary sources that make the world of news a bit more less "sound bite" and more a "satisfying meal". Fast Flip is cool.

| The news doesn't have any depth nowadays because instead of reporting the news, anchors are constanlty injecting their own political slant into it. Seemingly when republicans do it on Fox news it's bad, but when democrats do it on other networks it's ok. |
That's because they generally don't do it anywhere near as systematically and disingenuously as Fox News does it, and they're much less prone to actively lying or misconstruing a situation while doing it.
Sure, many reporters have a Liberal bias. But Fox News goes above and beyond bias in its Conservative leanings, and often leaks directly into outright propaganda and lies. When Bush was in office, the Liberal networks were no where near as hard on him as Fox News is on Obama. Hell, Fox News has been actively promoting anti-government protests since Obama got into office. |

I also think that most news is flippant and shallow, and doesn't even go into the whys or wherefores. That's why I bought a subscription to StratFor. They talk about all sorts of current events and offer extensive analysis of pretty much anything. Its proven to be actually too much information for me to read all of it regularly, but I try to dive in as much as possible. If anyone wants to see a report of whats happening in afghanistan, with a few paragraphs relating it to the bigger 100-year picture, and why its significant, and what will likely happen in the future as a consequence of these events, this is definitely the place to go. They might turn out to be wrong, but at least they put some thought into it! And if they are wrong, they will say why, what happened that they didn't notice, and give a new analysis and projection. Its like I'm part of the CIA for $200 a year!
Edit: oh I guess its $350 a year now. heh. Kinda expensive? I got a christmas-related deal for $200 a year. |

I just have to continue to disagree with the belief that the news is dumbed down. There is lots and lots of great journalism and we are in a bright age. Especially now with bloggers - you can read your fav. writer and get even more indepth commentary.
The problem is in how the news reaches its audience. The web is great but it also can be singled out for "preaching to the choir". Meaning, people only read what they already believe or are slanted towards. There is no serendipity and chancing upon as in the old newspapers of yore.... (although this too is debatable). I also think that we are seeing A LOT of change in the news biz. They are searching for new models of delivery and until that happens, we will have the problem of "sound bite" and a very "hot " medium as McLuhan might describe it.
SEE this great article
http://www.nybooks.com/articles/22960
for as full a rundown on the topic of this discussion as there is. Lots of great links to original sources and articles on this subject.
In particular I urge others to check out a site like http://www.propublica.org/
This follow up by Bill Keller Editor of the Times - really lays out some great points regarding the new place of the media in the world "mind".

I really think it is all about delivery. We need better sources of delivery now that the media is so fine tuned to our own needs and not so general is appearance.
