I have another question about these things.
I decided to get two of the 16gb 2G models refurbished from the Apple store. They seem like a pretty good deal to me. One of them will be for me, and the other is for my wife. She is Korean, so I am wondering if she will be able to surf Korean websites and type in Korean with an American iPod Touch.
Thanks again for all the information! You have all been tons of help! |

| doubtful. Since Almost all Korean sites are optimized for IE it won't work. Don't forget, Itouch comes with only Safari |

| You will be able to type in Korean though. I use the Korean and Japanese keyboards along with the regular qwerty. |

Is the Safari for the iPod any different than the Safari for normal Macs or PCs? I just put Safari on my PC and I can view Korean web pages with no problems.
Also, Korean web sites generally work fine using Google Chrome or Firefox. I almost never use IE for anything except to look at the Seoul bus maps, because that site requires some weird install. |

| Well I tried some sites don't seem to load right. But majority seems to load okay. You can't check your bank account for sure |

Probably has something to do with the bazillion ActiveX installs required by 'secure' Korean sites. |

For my wife, she would probably only read stuff from Daum or Naver, or some other similar site. Also, she would check her hotmail account. Facebook (she likes to use thatfrom time to time)has a seperate app to download for the ipod, right?
I'm curious about the warranty, too. If I get them from a retailer in the USA, is the warranty valid in Korea? If something breaks, I sure don't want to have to send it all the way back to the US to get fixed! |

Daum recognizes your Apple as a mobile device (as many other sites do, too) and gives you a special page for that which fits your screen and loads quickly. Naver does the same. Of course, not nearly the information is on the front page due to size, but you can surf around and do nearly all that you normally would. I can use most English sites with no problem, other than that Flash material just shows up as an empty placeholder with a little lego-like symbol telling me it won't work.
Sites that are flash-heavy, like Auction.co.kr or Enuri.com don't load well, take a while, or can actually time out (like enuri does, because it's so much flash). Auction is usable, but you miss all of the flash information on the front page. Other sites (like E-bay and Facebook) offer a special downloadable program (that's how E-bay does it) on the app store that allows you to view/use the site as a mobile user.
As was mentioned, it's free to add languages to your keyboard.... easy peasy.
I'm addicted to the thing. When they finally make flash available, or another browsing device allows it, I'm totally on it. Glad I didn't buy a netbook -- a netbook is still an albatross to carry around everywhere, so it would just get left home. This goes in my pocket and I don't even know I have it until I need it.

Has anybody been to costco in yangjae yet? I'm thinking of going there to pick up the 16gig itouch.
Don't want to make a trip down there and find out they don't have it. |

Go to the Sangbon location on the olive-colored line in NE Seoul. They had the 16gb and 32gb. They were out of the 8gb.
You can look up the number and call them... I did before I got my 8gb. |

| Apple's warranties are only good for the country that they're sold in. If you called in with a hardware issue covered under warranty you'd have to send it to an American address and then call to set up a repair from that address. They would see by your serial # what country it's from. |

FYI, I've noticed that Lotte Department Store's (gag) 8gb price at Nowon was 300,000 last night. That's cheaper than I paid at Costco 2 months ago. They had 32gb and 64gb models, if I was reading the chart right. Not sure about 16gb... probably.
Check out a Lotte Dept. store. (never thought I'd say that!) |
