Hello all!

So...in short...a system...with monitor...for under 2 million won.

I would also like to know how you protect yourself from viruses these days...especially those of you who download from torrent sites and the like.

Thanks in advance for any help that you guys can give me.

The best reply will win a beer at Hooters on the day I get the P.C built! Assah!!!

two million is an outrageous amount for a desktop. I completely redid my computer (all except the case) with a bad-ass system for about 450k. I had the monitor already, but a really nice one is only 200k-300k.

I use Linux but I keep a spare drive with Windows loaded for those apps that just don't run on Linux (there's damn few of them these days). Free is good!

It's possible to make a plenty fast PC with a P45 mobo and 775 CPU. That will bring the mobo+CPU cost down to 350,000.

Add,

4GB 800mhz RAM..........120,000
HD5850.........................300,000
2x1TB HDD....................200,000
Quality PSU...................100,000
DVD drive......................40,000
Case + fans....................60,000

well, actually, that's around 1.1 - 1.2 mill for a rig that doesn't have much of an upgrade path......

First reviews of ATI HD5850 shows it to be an awesome value card for anyone gaming with a less than 30'' monitor.......i.e....most of us.....

http://www.tweaktown.com/reviews/2947/sapphire_radeon_hd_5850_1gb_video_card/index.html

This thing beats the Nvidia GTX285 on most games.......but it's only $260!!!

Expect it to be 350,000+ in Korea......

Damn.....I'd be a forever friend to anyone who will buy me one of these cards in the States on their next trip home. I'd make it worth your while.

Went looking today to get an idea about how expensive things will be...and managed to convince the accountant that we could purchase an lg m2794d based on the fact that it has a digital tuner...an item that serves more than one purpose is a welcome addition to the home. So...it appears that the first item will be purchased this evening (Yongsan's prices could not quite compete with the interwebs) and delivered on Tuesday. From there...it's just a matter of getting all of the complicated stuff over the next month or two (waiting for the HD5850 to be released) and then having the dude assemble it.

So...went with Eamo's suggested monitor...even though it wasn't on my list (I forgot to put the monitor on the spec sheet). It does look like a fantastic monitor...at a decent price (the accountant wanted to spend 100,000 more to get a slightly smaller Samsung...because it's Samsung).

^ A wise choice! 27'' is just about perfect for a desktop monitor. You can lean back on a good office chair to watch movies and still get a big-screen effect.

Plus, the LG monitor has so many connections. Literally everything. HDMI included.

Koreans and Samsung........groan......that company have totally got this country by the balls. I think they're getting subliminal messages on the TV or something...... They go for Samsung like moths to the flame!!

My house if full of LG stuff and everything works great. You can save roughly 10% by choosing the LG equivalent over Samsung.

Well...I bit the bullet and got the computer yesterday. It will be delivered tomorrow, so I can't say if I am happy etc just yet. The little boss had final say, and demanded some savings, so I ended up with an i5 and the 4890 rather than the i7 and the newer graphics card. I also kept the RAM at 4 gigs...under the assumption that it will make her happy now, and I can sneak another 2 gig stick in at a later date (maybe a mistake??).

I am happy with the compromise...it should allow me to do the few things that I need to do over the next 18 months, and then, when we go home for a couple of years, I can talk her into a new system.

Eamo, thanks for the help and advice. Aiming for the i7 etc was worth it because it meant that changing things down one level made me and the boss happy. I owe you a beverage some day some place.

No probs Burndog, I enjoy talking tech.

The i5 and 4890 are good buys.

In the now standard question to ask about a system's power, "Can it play Crysis?", your rig would be able to answer, yes. But not higher than 1920x1080 and maybe with the shaders turned down in advanced graphics. You might get 25-30 FPS which is playable for Crysis.

Your new rig should burn though any other game easily at max everything.

You can put another 2GB of RAM in there later, of course..........but AFAIK, the P55 mobo's which support the i5 don't support the Tri-Channel mode, like the i7/X58 boards do.......so you'll have a larger 6GB memory capacity, but will lose the speed you had before with Dual-Channel memory mode........something to read up on and think about.....I'm not sure just how much of a difference it makes.

You could save a chunk by going for a 3 core AMD. The article bassexpander posted about the 720 Black edition made it sound like a great economic CPU. AM3 motherboards are generally quite a bit cheaper than Intel compatible ones too.

I looked around at some other articles, and was about to recommend the OP buy an i5 machine with his budget... glad to see he did. I want one, but it's about 200,000 out of my budget once you start adding the somewhat more expensive parts to own one over an AMD. Given what I plan to do, I'd rather save the 200,000.

The i5 is actually quite economical on energy (far better than the energy-hog i7), yet more powerful than the higher AMD offerings. It's one heck of a chip (several pages to see here):

http://www.anandtech.com/cpuchipsets/showdoc.aspx?i=3638&p=9

I came across that review while considering the new AMD 630 X4 Propus (something I'd consider possibly a better buy than the 720 Black, depending on what you were doing with it). The 620 version (a bit slower than the 630) is the world's first $99 quad core chip. The reason why I like it over the 720 black is because it does better with 4 cores on some video rendering programs than the 730's 3 cores. If you push the 730 up with overclocking, things can be different. I liked the 620 and 630's energy savings, too.

It's fun to think about for a few weeks until Windows 7 is released and I can buy my new machine.

I'd love to upgrade to i7, or even i5, right now but have agreed with the accountant that I can get an HD5850 now, then i7/i5 set-up next Summer....

.....prices should be well down by then....the chips themselves aren't so bad, it's the x58 mobo's that cost so much right now.

One idea, which I'm doing, is to overclock whatever you have now until you can afford to go i5/i7......

Well....it's all here and I'm getting everything set up. Small problems have been overcome...problem one being that the DVD drive doesn't appear to work. Not happy about that...but have a spare external, so temporary solution is to just use that.

Converted a spare external to FAT32 and am slowly transferring music, movie and photo files across. Now I need to find a replacement program for iTunes, Quicktime (which in a MAC is 1 million times better than on Windows) and iPhoto.

I'm a bit concerned that it appears that I have 2.99 gig of RAM rather than 4...but am also concerned that I'm such a newb that I can't figure it out!!! Having the KT man around tomorrow eve to re-set the internet connection for the new set up. I've already got the windows 7 iso...but with no DVD drive (my external is only a CDRW) I have no idea what to do.

Kind of in limbo...can't install my games (need the internet to verify Football Manager)....can't install Win 7...so waiting for the net...and need to work out how to get the DVD replaced when I live in Yongtong, and Yongsan is in....Yongsan!!!!

Not a smooth build so far then!!

Which OS are you using at the moment? XP? Is it the 32-bit or 64-bit version? 32-bit windows can't recognize more than 3GB of RAM. You need x64 Windows for 4GB or more.
What's your version of Windows 7?

Replacing iTunes.......I don't see the need. I have my music in my download folders. If I want to play something I click it and my VLC player plays it. Very basic I suppose.

I suppose if you want to make playlists then you need something more like iTunes....I dunno what's the the Windows version of iTunes.....I've never organized or played music like that.

Quicktime= VLC, GOMplayer, PowerDVD, WMP Classic......there are many to choose from. VLC is free and comprehensive. Recommended.

You need to try that DVD drive again. See if it shows up in Device Manager.

Did you put this together yourself? Or did it come custom-built?

Another great response...cheers. I thought that the RAM was a problem with my lack of knowledge rather than a greater issue. Maybe it's the same with the DVD drive. Device manager shows me three options including a DVD RAM drive. Interestingly, in my computer, I can eject the DVD drive, and close the tray by right clicking the DVD RAM picture, but not by clicking the DVD drive picture itself. Not sure what this means. i might try for some drivers when the net's on tomorrow...but I'm unsure. I found an external DVD burner in my old tech drawer...so it's more annoying than inconvenient.

I had it built for me by the store in Yongsan...they've been good for me in the past, but this is a pretty silly mistake.

I have misplaced the version of Windows 7 that I had...it's somewhere between here (my old Macbook) and the PC. Bugger. I have the strangest feeling that I stupidly deleted it in between file transfers. I guess I should sleep to avoid such stupid errors.

****Edit - Found the file. It's Windows 7 Ultimate AIO Activated (or something remarkably similar. It appears to be the right size...I've got a Windows 7 ISO verifier just to be sure...it will check the files to make sure they're legit! I hope!!!

Oh...and I am certain that being an XP box at the minute I am 32 bit...not 64. I want to get Windows 7 though...and would get it legitimately...or even from Yongsan if someone was selling it. But I didn't ask!

It hasn't been the smoothest transition so far, but it's a big switch, and it will take a wee bit of time. I had my Korean class tonight, so didn't get to spend much time with the machine. I have class on Tue and Thur, and I have dinner plans every Wednesday...so Friday night will be my best chance to spend some real time trying to sort it all out (unless of course, I have plans that have been made for me!!!).
