Cindy: I was awarded a prize and I got promoted
Jack: Congratulations! You deserve it.
The book says "deserve" is the correct answer, but it is about a past action (the promotion) so I think it should be "deserved." It uses "deserves" like this several times in the book.
Please tell me I am right or is this some random exception? |

book is right.
The promotion may have been used in past tense, but the response could be in present tense. |

yes but does he still deserve to be punched in the face the next day? probably not. The prize winner, however, still deserves the prize at the time of speaking so the simple present would be more customary |

But the prize and promotion have been given, so it is a past action that she got for doing.
How about this...
1. Great job Obama! You deserve the Nobel Peace Prize!
2. Great job Obama! You deserved the Nobel Peace Prize!
Which is correct? |

They're both possible but the one with 'deserved' is referring to the action of getting the prize, which has finished, while the one with 'deserve' refers to the still true state of being a great guy etc... |
