I've got an HP computer, and the fan has started making a wee bit of rubbing noise about 5% of the time. I assume it''ll only get worse.

Any idea what it costs (no warranty) to fix such a thing?

Fans themselves are really cheap......you'll be paying for the labor time involved to take it apart and install.

Take it to the HP A/S center for a quote.

I used to own a computer store in the US and this stuff there is notoriously expensive.

I don't know about here, but in the US they keep the supply chain for the parts for laptops tightly locked. Most of the parts are proprietary and designed for just a few models of laptops before the technology moves on and get's redesigned (very different from desktops where most parts are easily gotten and fit many many models).

Example... I owned a Gateway laptop and needed a new CD drive for it. I WAS AN AUTHORIZED GATEWAY RESELLER OF PCS and they would NOT sell me just the CD. I had to send it in and 5 years ago it was a $350 repair bill. I was furious but there was little else I could do as I couldn't get my hands on the proprietary CD drive. I even tried to buy a used model for parts but could not find one.

Maybe Asia is better. It would not surprise me either way.

If the fan is going bad, watch it closely. If it stops it won't take long to fry the CPU and then you are probably looking at a new laptop if you want one or not.

I'm not actually sure it is going bad... might just have something stuck in there. It sounds more like a piece of dirt is rubbing in there, and only at low speeds about 5% of the time. It's odd... didn't start until I blew some air cleaner in there.
