I don't work too far from there, but didn't know this was going on today.
Not that I planned on joining in and getting married, but I guess this was quite a spectacle.

The event is meaningless as by law the Reverend has no authority to actually celebrate (in South Korea, one registers a marrige as opposed to celebrating it officially) a marriage.

One would hope that those marrying for the first time don't forget to do the paperwork involved and do not have major immigration hurdles.

Megalomania, thy name is Moon.

I don't know how many Westerners understand who Rev. Moon is, or for that matter, how many Koreans do, either. Obviously some Davesters do, but....

Have any of you seen Moon's masterpiece, "Inchon!"?

Check this out:

and

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d0JIrxzPjXo

I think there might be more on Youtube, if you search. Supposedly, the copy disappeared from public view shortly after its disastrous premier.

Let's see, there's

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0084132/ and

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Inchon!

So, it was originally called "Oh, Inchon!"

I'm not making this up. As in "Oh, Calcutta!"

Reading about this turkey will really brighten your day. Here's a gem from IMDB:

Quote:
When location filming ran past the original production schedule, Olivier insisted on being paid his "bonus salary" in weekly cash payments, delivered to him as briefcases full of money, flown to the location by helicopter

Yeah, well considering what they did to him....

Quote:
Laurence Olivier appeared wearing ghastly Douglas MacArthur makeup that has the effect of making him look like an oriental actor playing an occidental.

you might be a little touchy about getting paid, too, given the movie's prospects.

Some say that Rev. Moon, even with his Moonies and a free Rolls-Royce raffle, couldn't fill up the movie theater on its premier.

Quote:
I recall the one weekend that this movie was in theatrical release. I was on a first date and there were absolutely no date-worthy movies playing. A bunch of well-dressed students (whom I later guessed to be Moonies)were lined up to see this one. Upon investigation I saw the producers were raffling off a Rolls Royce to all who bought a ticket. "Ooohh," she said. "Wouldn't it be fun if we won a car by going to see a movie?" OK, so I relented.

Don't look for this movie in stores or even on torrentz. My guess is the only remaining copies of Inchone! are stored deep inside a locked vault.

(Hey, please post the next time Moon is doing a wedding. Maybe I can finally get a date!)

Nice to see you, Gatsby.

Most older Koreans seem to know who the guy is, but I don't think he has much of a following among Koreans, at least probably not what he was hoping for when he created his church and pumped it full of nationalist ideology. Most of the Moonies I've encountered over here seem to either be westerners or Japanese, doing some sort of missionary work in the Fatherland. The few Koreans I know who follow him were converted by the foreigners, I think. (A lot of the Japanese-language teachers in Gwangju seem to be Moonies.)

I knew an American couple who were actually married in one of those mass weddings. They seemed happy and compatible, actually. And they did not at all fit the stereotype of the brain-dead zombie cult members.
