I was thinking certain used-to-be-generic ex-pat complaints of yore have been crossed off the list. For instance, remember when...
...you couldn't get real coffee anywhere? No Starbucks equivalents, only overpriced coffee shops with sickly sweet instant coffee concoctions?
...if you bought Italian food in a restaurant, you'd get watery pasta that even someone with the worst possible cooking skills would be ashamed to produce at home?
...there was no blue sky in Korea? It was grey skies, grey skies, day after day?
...even in Seoul, people would stare and giggle at you?
...even in Seoul, people would give your Korean gf dirty looks just for holding hands with you or being with you?
...people would stand on both lanes of the escalators, oblivious to those who might want to move up or down a little faster?
...rolls of toilet paper were almost always used in restaurants in lieu of tissue paper napkins?
...mini-skirts were unheard of?
...women had to hide in an unfrequented corner of the stairs if they wanted to smoke?
Things have certainly come a long way. Any more to add to the list? |

Remember when...Summer meant student protests with tear gas. It just isn't a Korean summer without the tear gas. |

...Koreans lit themselves on fire in protest. I miss the smell of napalm in the morning. |

All of these still happen on a frequent basis. |

YES! I feel like I should let out a soju-driven tirade of "Yah~"s and "18"s while wearing a shiny suit and necktie every time I walk into a coffee shop because of where this has gone. |

Why? Girls always smoked in coffee shops. |

Yeah, I suppose they might have. I didn't start going to coffee shops here until this year.
Well, on the street too, then. |

In 1996 I remember the tear gas, but I also remember seeing a good number of mini skirts too. |

There's a new city project to stop people from standing on one side of the escalator so others can walk up. Apparently its dangerous. I saw an ad depicting a person tripping while walking up the escalator with infomerical-esque agility. So I can't really blame people for standing on both sides though a part of me believes many are just being rude assholes. |
